Does this mean American markets will get shut out of the broadcast because Rogers is primarily cable?

We don't get Canadian cable (like TSN) in the states.

That would likely be the case, Boss - However, if CBC loses HNIC, you might as well shut down CBC as well, Dragon's Den and Rick Mercer ain't enough to save the network.

Wow that would suck big time, Not only for hockey fans in the States but the future television market in Canada. Sounds like bad news dash.

It's a shame really, but what can you do when you are a subsidized network and the government doesn't give a flying fuck about the film and television industry in this country.

The one thing that worries me is if TSN and cable networks get the deal, are they going to continue to bend over to the US networks and show their feeds of games instead of their own broadcasts.

you wanna talk about bending over? look at this playoff schedule ... how many games on saturday night? cbc pays the most for broadcast rights and they consistently take it up the pooper without saying boo

The main reason I want HNIC to go to TSN is the play-by-play and studio talent far surpasses the jokers that Sportsnet currently employs...not to mention the broadcast quality is much better as well.

Im indifferent on who ... I think if sportsnet gets the rights youll see movement in the "talent"

/just look at their executives: Pelley (from TSN) Moore (from CBC)

Not only the playoff schedule but the regular season as well. The NHL has bent over backwards to make sure Canadian markets get "prime" Saturday night games.

When was the last time the Leafs or Canadiens didn't play on a Saturday night, home or away?

People can bitch about the schedule all they want but it's obvious that Canadian teams have been given the prime games on the weekends. Shit, The Sabres have told the NHL they will give up any Friday night games to cut down the back to back games they have led the league in over the past three years.

Canadian based teams have zero ground to stand on when it comes to being screwed for TV scheduling reasons. Look at the schedules, they don't lie.

youre going on a tangent boss

there was 1 saturday night game in may during the playoffs ... you telling me cbc calls the shots? you telling me they want afternoon games? they want that saturday night game ... they pay the most money for the tv rights in north america

... and they dont get it???

/the only thing cbc is willing to fight for is Maple leaf saturday evening games ... thats it!

No, I'm saying during the regular season. Canadian teams get the priorities for the Saturday night games. jstew, look at the regular season schedule there is no disputing that.

The regular season schedule takes time to put together the playoffs do not because there is no time to look at arena availabilities and travel on a short notice.

I'm just saying that during the REGULAR SEASON it is very obvious that Canadian teams get the preferred dates. Nothing wrong with that because they do generate most of the money.

I don't think we're on the same page here. My point is the NHL doesn't HATE Canadian teams or they wouldn't cater to their weekly schedules.

Bettman's number one goal since he has been commish is to grow the game in the U.S. He will do whatever it takes to make that possible including giving NBC everything they want, even if they don't pay the most. CBC has always been gutless, so it's no surprise they cave in to whatever Gary wants.

Well, let's put jstew's theory to the test - Of course, this requires the Leafs making the playoffs.

caman dash ... the leafs make the playoff next year and, after the parade is over, they play the Rags round 1 game 1 in NYR on a saturday? day or night game?

now lets change it up and say flames make it and open up in LA on a saturday? i dont even have to give you the option with this scenario because the answer is so obvious

other stuff about the leafs sale approval ... nhl doesnt want cbc frozen out ... not because they love the cbc but because if cbc gets out of hockey now ... theyre never coming back in and the subsequent cdn broadcasting rights deal wont have any competing bids

John Shannon ‏@JSportsnet
Sale of TML approved. Not mentioned in release is that Rogers and Bell will not be permitted to bid together for Natl rights.

For those who have asked, "Natl rights" are Hockey Night in Canada. League wants Rogers and Bell to be competitors for TV rights

Bell will not have to divest themselves of shares of Canadiens.NHL source told me "Very strict operating restrictions as part of consent."
