Well, if it's supposed to be an offensive thread, I think it worked with Swangin!
HaHa... not at all. Only offensively confused

I am a yankee fan and i will be the first one to admit that Robinson Cano is over-rated... Or to be more exact he is an under achiever... He has the skills to be better than he is. He is a career .309 hitter, which is great, but he has a career .272 BA with RISP. For a .309 hitter that sucks. Thats a .037 differential, that is way to high... And with that said he then should at least get 15 more RBIs per season... but he doesnt...

I don't know if I'd use the term overrated to discribe Cano. He has been one of the more consistantly good hitters in the game. I would probably discribe him as somewhat disappointing in the clutch.

It's been said before, " hitting a pitched ball is the toughest thing to do in sports. " I wholeheartedly agree considering the types of pitches and the various speeds at which they are thrown. What you're saying about Cano can be said about many of the better players at one time or another in their careers. High expectations soley on ability alone doesn't always translate to success.

That differential is probably going to change. I am not a Yankee fan, but the guy is a horse. I'd take him any time, especially at a weak hitting position like second base...

Absolutely. That's why I have a hard time buying the overrated theory. It's not the first time someone has suggested this, either.

Maybe this is just semantics, but if a player is disappointing or under achieving then doesnt he have to be over-rated?? otherwise he would not have been disappointing or underachieving...

I think it would help if you explained how he under achieves. That's what I'm getting confused about. What are the expectations you have for him?

He's whining because he only hits .277 with RISP. I'd love to compare that with other elite hitters.

BigD. I have been attempting to compare him with other elite hitters and forget about defensive position. This thread was supposed to just be an offensive thread. I feel like most people compare players who play the same position. But when we are talking about offense then position should not be taken into account. And if u are used as a middle of the lineup guy then u should be compared to the other middle of the lineup guys. And there I don't think cano is top 10.

Name me the guys you would put ahead of Cano then?

Nice to see some baseball talk!

I'd love to see him match Ryne Sandberg's 40 HR from 1990. He may do it this year - it's his 'walk' or 'contract' year, isn't it? I like him as a player, but I'm a bit concerned about the Dodgers possibly trying to land him, and thus overpaying for him. If they get him for 5 years or less, it will be a good deal. Unless they pay $120 million + for those 5 years...

5 yrs at 120 million really wouldn't be an overpay. Cano is arguably the best 2nd baseman in baseball and is a sure bet to produce 5 fWAR for the next few seasons and most likely out perform that at least once if not a couple times. Figuring $5m/WAR cano would likely produce some excess value in that contract.
