Well, Nugent-Hopkins has 22 points in 21 Edmonton Oilers games.

Only 20 rookies in NHL history have managed at least 82 points, including Peter Stastny (109 in 1980-81 with the Quebec Nordiques), Stastny’s brothers Marian (89) and Anton (85), plus Mikael Renberg (82).

Only 51 rookies have racked up even 70 points, including current Montreal Canadiens centre Scott Gomez(notes) in a tie with Billy Mosienko, who is in the record book for the fastest three goals (21 seconds) in history.

Unless Nugent-Hopkins’ talent evaporates or he gets hurt, he should easily surpass the totals of other No. 1 draft picks in recent years. Steve Stamkos scored 46 points in 2008-09, John Tavares(notes) had 54 in ’09-10, and Taylor Hall(notes), who missed 17 games with a high ankle sprain, scored 42 points in ’10-11.

Teemu Selanne(notes) has the gold seal for rookies — 132 points with the Winnipeg Jets in ’92-93.

Two more goals today. Long season but he looks like a stud

Did you know he's only 18 years old?

There is a nice influx of youth in Edmonton. I don't see them making the playoffs this year, or next for that matter, but I don't think they're all that far from being a playoff caliber team if they can keep their core together and build around it shrewdly.

I'd actually take that one step further. I can see them getting hot and possibly making it this year. If they can find a franchise goalie, I can see them as a Cup favorite within the next 3 years. When you look at what that defense has done so far, combined with their scorers maturing, they remind me of the recent Penguins and Blackhawks. As with any playoff series though, they have to prove that they can down the usual suspects (Detroit, San Jose, Vancouver). Those teams always seem to be there, so that's the test.
