Business wise it is a service and they likely make minimal ad income from the clicks. It also serves as a way to recruit new members... But TBH it is probably just a relic from back when they were trying to grow. Heck most home boards have free areas for the same reason.

I think you might be kind of like me in the fact that the home board nor the main board held much of interest even though we were paying members. I think there others that feel the same. I swear I only kept paying them out of habit. They honestly had nearly no info that I can not find elsewhere for free.
