R.I.P. Tark the Shark

Love him or hate him, he was one of the best. Did a great job of giving 2nd chances to kids who needed them and was the best at spitting in the eye of the NCAA.

R.I.P. Jerry Tarkanian. The basketball world lost a great one today.

One of the great times in all of sports was early 90s CBB and a big reason behind it was the Runnin Rebs led by The Shark.

One of my favorite sports teams of all time was 90s UNLV.

So entertaining.

Losing two legends the same week will make for a hell of a tourney this season. Dean and Tark will make sure of that from wherever they are.

Even though Lute and Tark had their differences, I'm pretty sure that any real AZ fan had a ton of respect for the guy. My dad used to play in a golf tourney in Vegas every year, and when he came home once, he brought me a Tark the Shark hand puppet. It was fucking hilarious. It was a shark with a towel sewn into its mouth. I was like 10, so I didn't have a really good idea who he was, but he became one of my favorites after I learned about him and that towel.

Just heard the news that Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Tarkanian passed away this morning.

Tark coached Riverside Community College out here in my neck of the woods from 1961-1966. A very good friends Dad actually played on a couple of those teams. To this day, he talks about the positive impact Tark had on him back then.

He went on to own a very successful business and always credited a lot of his success to lessons he learned from Tark.

I loved seeing him show up at the T&M for UNLV games. He is a legend in Vegas.

RIP Tark. He was before my time, but I have seen several documentaries on his UNLV teams and read his autobiography "Runnin Rebel," give it a read if you haven't already, great stuff. That 91 team is hands down the best of all time to not win it all.

Tarkanian was offered the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job in 1977, but declined, continuing to coach college basketball.
