I disagree with the first part. While I think most of the jokes were from people that didn't give a shit one way or the other, those that formed a connection deal with grief differently. I say a connection, as people will say it's not like you knew the guy. As a sports fan, you form connections with players. Roy was the best pitcher I have ever seen play for the Phillies in my lifetime, he was also the most humble. The connection and respect he had with Ruiz and vice versa was great. Two of my favorites. I was reading things all day that reflected on the life of the man, very somber day. A laugh here and there is a way to cope, that being said, didn't care for the one referenced.

Shame you were too young for "Lefty", just as I was for Robin Roberts....

I was just watching ESPN and they ran a story about Doc recalled by some reporter (can't remember his name) who went on to tell about meeting him after his no hitter in 2010 in Cinci, he was on the phone with his 8 yr old son (a HUGE Halladay fan) and Roy had just finished all his interviews and was walking down the hallway and the reporter complimented him on his feat. His son heard his father talking over the phone and asked "were you just talking to Doc?!?!?!?" the reporter replied 'yes' and then the reporter said he did something he'd never think of doing to any other pro athlete, he asked Roy if he'd say 'hi' to his son. Well, you know where I'm going with this megastud ace who just threw a no-hitter and just went through a TON of interviews gladly takes the phone and talks to his son for a few minutes (his son went all reporter on him and asked him what it was like to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter in the same season).

My eyes instantly welled up with tears as I have a nine year old son and that story resonated with me....I've only teared up twice due to a non-family member passing: Bo Schembechler and Ronald Reagan being the other two.

R.I.P. Roy, you weren't a Phillie for very long, but you are one of my Top Five and a class act!

I said this to my father right after the Bill Joel song by the same name had finished playing on the radio in the car. He replied "BULLSHIT, PLENTY of bad people die young - you just don't hear about them."
