IRVING, Texas -- Jethro Pugh played alongside Hall of Famers Bob Lilly and Randy White in a long career as a defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys, which may explain why he was among the most unsung Super Bowl winners in the franchise's storied history.

Pugh, who played in the first four Super Bowls for Dallas and was part of a "Doomsday Defense" that won two of them, died Wednesday. He was 70.

The team said Pugh died of natural causes four days before the Cowboys were to play their first postseason game in Green Bay since the famous Ice Bowl in 1967. Pugh was blocked on Bart Starr's quarterback sneak for the game-winning touchdown in Dallas' 21-17 loss in the Ice Bowl that sent the Packers to the second Super Bowl.

"He was loved and appreciated by his teammates and Cowboys fans for decades, and his spirit will be felt when our team travels to Green Bay this weekend," owner Jerry Jones said.

He got a lot of pressure on Starr during the "Ice Bowl". He was also the one that GB noticed on film was too high in his stance in the goal line defense and thus felt they could exploit on that final "31 Wedge" for the TD. Ironic that he goes right before we play GB in a playoff game.

Note: yes I just watched the Ice Bowl on NFLN the other night!!!

The Ice Bowl was one of the most iconic NFL games ever played.

Was that game colder than the one in Cincy around 1980 maybe 81. I remember Fouts huddling the chargers up with like 5 minutes to go with the score 14-0 it seems. It was like they wanted to get the game over with.

The good old days for sure. Pugh was little before my time. White probably my favorite player off those defenses white was such a monster. Too bad the refs screwed us in those 2 super bowls vs the steelers

I have been outside in -70 windchills as a young kid. I thought I was tough and do chores without wearing gloves. Big mistake. Was outside for 15 minutes and worst part was when my hands started to warm up. Excruciating pain.

Pugh belongs in the NFL HOF ... it's really a disservice to him to keep him and several others out. The Cowboys Doomsday defense was 2nd to none ...
