David Bowie said:
This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating
in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

RIP David.

A true giant.

Totally sucks. He was always one of my favorites because you couldn't ever just put him any one category.

The guy who did Ziggy Stardust also sang "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby. And covered a Motown girl group and arguably did it better.

Scary Monsters is the one that really helped me appreciate his genius. Story is he wanted to switch record labels and had to release one more for RCA and didn't want to use any of his "A" material. So he used some things he'd written and scrapped and then made some new ones up to fill an album that he didn't care about.

He made this up:

And pulled this one out of the bin:

That album also included "Fashion" and "Teenage Wildlife". And he didn't "care" about that album.

Space Oddity is a classic, but 43 is exactly right, Bowie experimented will all different kinds of music. RIP David.

I watched that Bowie/Crosby duet when it was first broadcast. I remember Bowie coming out on stage and having him next to Crosby looked so strange. And then we were all floored at that amazing duet.

rip

from his first fan letter to an american

In answer to your questions, my real name is David Jones and I don’t have to tell you why I changed it. “Nobody’s going to make a monkey out of you” said my manager.

Defied genre. Unmistakably original. An actual musical genius.

He collaborated with Bing Crosby, Freddie Mercury and Trent Reznor.

At least we'll still have the music.

Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes
with death's release

I'm not a prophet
or a stone age man
Just a mortal
with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic
of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes
from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it
On, the next Bardot
I'm sinking in the quicksand
of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

RIP indeed to a true visionary.

RIP. A sign of how well respected and truly great he was is the number of times his songs have been covered. Saw the Foo Fighters earlier this year cover Under Pressure, Nirvana covered Man Who Sold the World, The Wallflowers covered Heroes, even John C Reilly/Dewey Cox covering Starman was outstanding.
