The kind words and wishes like "he deserved better" that will come from the sports world will be akin to a murderer showing up to the wake of his victim, and acting like he had nothing to do with it.

RIP

Always felt bad for him. He fucked up but there was a lot of blame to go around for that epic meltdown. He was just the guy who screwed up last.

Just heard Mr Statman, Tim Kirkchin say that Buckner never struck out more than 40 times in a season. That's about two months for some players now-a-days.

Man, I felt bad for him. His knees were so bad he could barely bend down.

Not saying his knees weren't cranky, but it was one of his ankles that was completely FUBAR by that point in his career. He was wearing hi-top cleats with ankle support and John fucking McNamara should never have left him in the game after the 7th inning, especially with slick fielding Dave Stapleton on the bench.

Anyways, it wasn't Bucks fault that the Sox lost that game, it was Calvin Shiraldi and Bob Stanley that fucked it all up before it ever got to that point.

I was at the Fenway home opener in 2008 and the whole scene with Billy Buck was really very touching...I was actually very proud of the crowd for supporting the man wholeheartedly. Just like everybody else, I clapped and yelled my heart out...I tried to start a "BIL-LY BUCK" chant going, but nobody could hear anything over the roar of the crowd.
Yes, Bill make a shitty play and it really sucked at the time...but, as mentioned above, Buckner's mobility was terrible due to his destroyed ankle and Stapleton was on the team specifically to replace him on defense late in the game. And a whole slew of stupid things had already happened as the Bosox slowly fell apart...it was actually incredible that Schiraldi got two outs with the pure shit BP pitches he was throwing up there.

I found it infuriating when everybody talked about how Billy Buck had been forgiven by the Boston fans...the man didn't need anybody's forgiveness. Did Ted Williams spend his whole life waiting for Boston fans to forgive him for sucking ass in the '46 WS? BTW, Ted was also hurt then like Buckner was in '86...

Honestly, I still think of Buckner as a Cub. He was one of the guys who could kinda play the game on those late '70s-early '80s teams that I saw so much on WGN.

Sox had plenty of opportunities to win the WS before the Buckner error. Schiraldi and Stanley blew it.

That was a soul crushing loss for the Red Sox and their fans caused by Buckner's error but those fans should be ashamed of the way they treated him afterward. I'm absolutely sure no one felt worse about the play than Buckner himself.

Wade Wilson? He had to be pretty young. So many of the stars from when I was a kid are dying.

Its funny; everyone blames Buckner but no one seems to remember that Bob Stanley threw a wild pitch one batter earlier that allowed the tying run to score.

Died on Feb 1st. (his 60th Bday) due to diabetes complications.
I didn't know that. I remember him giving hell to the 49ers in a playoff game back in the 80s when he was with the Vikings
