Julien: 'Players must do better job protecting themselves'

"Once you're in the pros, you've been told for many, many years never to play with your head down, so if he hasn't learned by now, he shouldn't be in the pros."

Are you talking about Sawada, or Savard? Because if it's the latter, don't worry... he probably is done in the pros.

I get that Julien wants to protect his player, but after what happened to Savard, I was hoping for a response along the lines of "Paille is not a dirty player, but we can't have those type of hits in the game any longer".

I think he's talking about players in general and he's right. Look at how many times players take a big hit when they skate with their head down. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Savard didn't have his head down when Cooke hit him last year. I don't think Paille meant to hurt Sawada, it was a shoulder check but unfortunately, from the blind side. Interesting comment from Andrew Ference. Julien should take PR lessons from him. "It was a bad hit," Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference said. "We can't be hypocrites when your own team does a hit like that which the league is trying to get rid of."

Very nice quote.

Lol fans too. Fans often spend lots of time defending bad hits that if they were against them they would instantly condemn. Or my favorite, most fans do not like the scuffles after a big clean hit, but when their team scuffles after a big clean hit its a good thing 'standing up for your team mates".

Kesler was almost caught at mid-ice by Campbell in the game last night (clean, but would have been a doozy)... if it hadn't have been a tight game, I would have loved to see Kesler take that fucker's head off.
Unsportsmanlike - yes, but I'm not hypocritical about it :D

I also wanted to see Kes bust Turco wide open with a shot up high for that nut shot.

have i mentioned that i don't like the Hawks very much :p

Sometimes I like to watch a hockey game that includes people trying to kill people. I grew up a Snorris child though.

I think Grapes is wrong on this one. Just because he's your teammate doesn't mean you have to stand up for him when he does somthing wrong. What if it was an off ice incident - is it the same too then, Don? Sure, there is a code and all the unwirtten rules in hockey, but is one of them being hypocritical and always standing up for your coach, team, and teammates?

So if a teammate in the McSorely or Betuzzi incidents was asked about it after the game, they would have to stand up for their teammate too?

pretty much - the old guard is... you die and kill, lie cheat and steal for your teammates. basically, because they are your teammates.
That thinking can set a pretty dangerous atmosphere in team sports / militaries / frats, etc.

of course, Milbury jumps on Team Cherry (I think he's lining up try to succeed the old bugger when Grapes finally hangs 'em up).
He said (paraphrasing) "above all else, you don't speak ill about a teammate"
another guy asks "So you lie?"
MM "No, you just tell the report 'I'm not going to answer your stupid question', and move on"

the rest of the panel pretty much gave him a collective eye-roll.

Funny, none of this was said when Billy G said Cooke's hit was a bad one. I mean, when a teammate says that, they're saying what everyone's thinking. Even the players that give those hits normally realize it was bad. Cherry's just a dummy.
