Richards - Ruutu

What do you guys think? What will they get, what should they get?

Richards got 5 for elbowing, it didn't really look serious though. He was standing still, Kaleta came in to basically hit him from behind into the players bench (not hard, just a bump) and Richards threw the elbow up. I don't think he will be suspended, I don't think he should. A fine at the most. It wasn't a dangerous play.

Ruutu hit Erat, I don't think Erat returned, and if Ruutu got a penalty it was 2 for interference (that's all the box score shows). On the replay, Ruutu cut across center ice and nailed Erat behind the play. He had his shoulder up, it was hard to tell if he hit Erat's head or not, but Erat dropped like a sack of bricks. If there's a replay showing Ruutu hit him in the head, fuck him. Out for the playoffs and maybe some of the regular season. If not, a game or two is fine.

I've only see the Richards one and I don't think he should get anything. It was more natural instincts to protect himself than a dirty play.

The Richards one didn't look suspendable to me, especially after Kunitz only gets a game for his elbow.

Richards doesn't have any history of suspension either (although the Booth hit would be a suspension now most likely, it wasn't back then).

Ruutu definitely looked like a game or two to me though.

Suspend Richards because he's a Flyer, and ban Ruutu for life, because he's Ruutu.

i was beside myself with rage when i thought richards got a minor penalty, the major put me over the top and i went straight to alcohol to ensure i didn't break anything.

Didn't see Richards, Ruutu was definitely interference, but Erat had his head down and I don't know if Ruutu hit his head or not - I originally thought he clipped his visor, but I only saw it in real time and haven't seen a replay yet.

If Richards had not even been given a penalty at all on the play, nobody would have even thought twice about it. Why? Kaleta initiated the contact. He's the sort of player that loves to stir the pot and this was one of those chippy plays that you always see late in a period of any physical hockey game. Penalties usually do not arise unless absolutely necessary. The same goes for scrums in front of the net while the puck is still technically loose. I've seen this same play hundreds of times with no penalty call.

Richards doesn't deserve anything more than a major, and he won't get suspended either. That was true before the Kunitz decision, but even moreso now.

I think the Richards hit is nothing new. He's gotten away with a number of hits that were worse. I don't know what he says to Campbell, but he seems like one of Colie's favorites.
