Response to Sherman and others and hopefully help to parents with children attending Universities in near future.
My son will be attending the University of Alabama this fall. Very proud of the fact he earned a Presidential scholarship, (full tuition), but you learn very quickly that represents about 35% of the cost. His housing alone will be over $1100 a month! That's almost my mortgage! Not to mention meal tickets, books and supplies and parking. they also make you put $375, both semesters, onto a type of credit card they can use around campus for gas, food, certain entertainment places. Not to mention if he goes the Fraternity route. Embarrassing to think your son earned full tuition and you're concerned if he can go. He will be able too, however, I don't want him to graduate with tons of debt like National Average. I say this to prepare other parents whose son will be attending Universities soon, so they won't be so shocked! Start early and investigate the, "you know what", out of scholarships and grants. They are everywhere, Most are based on achievement or financial need.
Must go through Fafsa. Fill it out, send it to your Universities, and they will let you know what you are available for that's out there. However, I encourage you to keep looking. They are everywhere, even outside fafsa. All the car dealerships, churches, chamber of commerce's, insurance companies. Almost all the associations, most times the industry giving the scholarship is looking for someone majoring in that particular industry. $250 or $500 a year will add up!
You think many of these football players have tons of debt at graduation? Athletes, like Sherman, don't realize what the normal student's and family's have to go through to attend a University either. The regular student body also won't have 24/7 tutors available doing everything but their work? Football players are told where to be, when to be there, and have the best of everything (paid for) to get these things done. And no on will ever convince me Professors aren't giving these athletes a ton of slack! I experienced in 30 years ago. I can only imagine.
My son is also in the honors college and they are expected to do a ton of community service, social events, student tutoring, civic activities, etc. If Sherman had a problem at school- easily solved! Sherman take your millions and your comments and we will try to feel sorry for you and all the other abused athletes, doing a sport they love! Wish my bank account was a half as big as Sherman's ego!
I would like to ask Sherman one question, If being a student athlete was so bad would you have traded it to be a regular student with none of those extras? Come out of college with $30,000 debt or more? Wonder how you were going to pay a certain bill because family had a bad few months? I cold go on but will save the posters the misery! Or was not having money one weekend to buy pizza or go to a movie torture?
