I am not advocating racism either... I mean, I don't believe it will ever end, so it doesn't bother me, but, I am just curious about constitutional rights and our freedoms with this issue. Then again, like you said, they are still considered children, I dunno...

Well, whatever, they are racist punks and got what they deserved, in my opinion.

Absolutely. And a school's duty to educate lies not only in teaching reading, writing, and 'rithmetic, but in building a strong citizenry and society with good values as well. As such, while a school's LIABILITY may only exist within its walls, it's RESPONSIBILITY extends far beyond them.

Convinced that the people are the only safe depositories of their own liberty, and that they are not safe unless enlightened to a certain degree, I have looked on our present state of liberty as a short-lived possession unless the mass of the people could be informed to a certain degree -Thomas Jefferson

I just got Jeffersonian on all of your asses!!! ;)

True. I dunno... I am not completely well versed with laws. Can a school really legally do what they're doing? I feel like this almost falls into the "seperation of church and state" type of category, no?

This has nothing to do with being PC. If a school has a behavioral code, then they can suspend you for things done not at school. The fact that playing on a team is not a right but a privilege makes this even more of a non-issue. They have the right to enforce a code of conduct and punish accordingly. I know you hate any form of infringement of free speech or whatever, but it is within the team's freedom of expression to boot or suspend them if they want as well. It goes both ways.

It just should not be done this way is all. The school is a seperate entity from their personal lives. If they posted from a school computer, or started ranting racism in school, then by all means, yes, suspend them from sports as well as school. If I was a neo-nazi, my work can't fire me. A school should have no say either what takes place outside of their confines. Unless of course it is criminally driven.

again, this is absolutely wrong. and that, too.

I honestly did not think a school could suspend a player for stuff done outside of the school unless it was criminally oreiented. Even if it was an extra-curricular activity like H.S. sports.

I am pretty positive that if I was affiliated with some supremacy group outside of work, so long as it wasn't a terrorist type group, and I wasn't getting arrested for shit, they would not be able to fire me. Like 99.99% sure.

Children are not yet considered full citizens. They are treated by the law differently both in terms of their rights (they can be subject to search and seizure within a school that would not be Constitutional to an adult) and to how we hold them responsible (they are usually tried and punished as juveniles, something that does not carry the same weight as being sent to trial as an adult).

I don't believe racism will ever end either, but I think it can still be a lot better than it is now, and that doesn't mean we should accept that kind of behavior and go 'oh well, it will always be there.' That is cowardice.

Unless you work for the government, odds are they could actually.

Most states have "at will" employment laws that state that an employer can fire you at any time for any reason, as long as that reason isn't a state or federally recognized protected class (i.e., fired just because you're black, woman, muslim, etc.).

I don't think neo-Nazi counts as a protected class

I don't think anybody thinks you were either. The point is, they went to a social/wide-range medium to get air out their opinions with their names attached to it. That's just asking for repercussions. If these kids went out to their backyards and screamed the N-word at the top of their lungs, nobody is worse for the wear (most likely).

Like I said, I'm pretty lax on stuff, I wouldn't have cared if the school chose no action either.....but they have to think of the long term safety/integrity of both the school and the students. This is why I'm not upset with the decision made by the school.

You are 100% wrong, actually. You have the right to be in the hate group and they have the right fire you if they want.

On what grounds?

breach of personal conduct regulations

I am applying for fed jobs now. It is a part of all of them. Employment is not a right in this country. You cannot be fired for race, religion, creed, sexuality etc etc etc. You can be fired for acting like an idiot though.

But as long as it is not a government job, will they just find a reason to fire you because of your afffiliation, or can they actually fire you for being affiliated with a hate group?
