They are talking about the name on NFL Live. Saying that is offensive Native Americans.

My question would the name Redskins still be offensive if they changed the symbol. Lets say that they change the Logo to a pig but keep the name Redskins would that still be offensive even though its not connected to Native Americans anymore or because of the history of the name, it would still be offensive.

When is enough, enough?

I'll say one thing, that ad was a savvy media piece. Quite successful at completely diverting the real issue at hand. Guess 'Context and intent ' of the team name means nothing. Apparently the redskins franchise is responsible now for perpetuating the NAs tragic history in this country; thru celebrating, blaspheming and disrespecting the entire NA population in America cuz we're all about rasicism NOT fandom. Right.

Yup, it's the name and mascot that is responsible for the plight of NAs today, not horrific public policy. Uh huh.

Well, the PC police might win the day, and if it's legislated, then so be it. But I sure as hell don't have to like or agree with the premise, argument or accusations of racist connotation.

Be careful what you wish for. You might actually get it.

The debate has grown tiresome and the only people that seem to mainly care and keep bringing it up are the PC police who seem more offended by the name than actual Native Americans.

I would imagine most people this day and age associate the name with the football team and only use it to refer it as such. In my 31 years of life on this earth I've yet to hear anyone use the term as a slur against Native Americans and the only people that hate the Redskins are fans of other football teams.

And I'm not against a name change if there was a strong unified support by Native Americans opposing the name but as far as I can tell some either like the name and team or most don't care and have bigger fish to fry and it's not that big of a group that strongly oppose it.

I guess the biggest thing that bothers me is that to me it's just grabbing the low hanging fruit. If you really want to help and fight Native Americans then spend that energy and effort in helping bring awareness to the myriad of social and economic issues they face. But it's "Hey we got that football team to change it's name aren't we great? Oh you want a job so you can feed your family? Sorry pal we're busy with getting those Cleveland Indians to change their name and logo for your sake".

It's definitely getting old. Change the name to something that nobody can say is offensive to an entire group of people. End of story.

the race that gave the name redskin to the Native Americans, were the Native Americans!
There are schools on reservations where their teams are called Redskins. Congress should just give it a rest. Why don't they go fix the economy or something.
I take zero offense to the name & I am Native American.

I dislike the Redskins for a whole other reason :becky:

The people that are leading the charge for this team name are white. They just want to go down in history as civil rights heroes. If they were civil rights heroes, they would be doing much more for people than changing a football teams name.

Correct, they should be working better on Obama care and the VA's for the vet's, then they would look better as civil leaders instead of changing a name of a professional team that's been around for 50 yrs now...

Over 10 years ago less than 10% of Native Americans were offended by the name. What has changed from then to now that has made this number allegedly skyrocket?

Native Americans are literally being manipulated by the whiteskins into thinking they're supposed to be offended by the Redskins name and mascot.

Reposted from the skins forum...

If they really wanted to show commitment they would simply go after the school boards of the respective states and demand the change. The Senators who apparently support this DO have the power to make a high school change its mascot after all. Yet we never hear of an all encompassing letter to ban the name Redskins from high school and college teams of which State funds are directly involved. Guess its more profitable to go after a private company after all.

My comment

The sheer hypocrisy involved in this issue is sickening.

Not to mention the slippery slope of the issue of personal liberties. Accusations of Rasicism that can easily snowball into the witch hunt mentality of Commie back in the day. This may seem extreme to some people. But this style of thinking IS very dangerous. That's why context and intent is so critical.

This style of movement/political attack skirts the edge of directly dictating policy on how to think. I see where this can lead. And this is Regarding a word that has NOT been universally embraced as racist. What will they pursue next? Very frightening.i

Again, If it's legislated, than so be it. Majority rules, but if the majority thinks like this, I think it's a sorry situation.

I hope the Packers will change to the Fudge Packers, the 49ers to the 69ers, the Hawks to the Cocks, the Vikings to the Crackers, the Browns to the ****ers, the Dolphins to the Floggers, the Bengals to the Gingers, the Giants to the Midgets, the Raiders to the Rapers, the Colts to Minors, the Chiefs to the Rednecks, the Saints to Christians, and lastly the Panthers (just look at the logo) to AsianBlue.

Then everyone can just shut the F up.

The funny part is those are the first people to tell you that you shouldn't tell *insert minority group here* they shouldn't offended all the while telling *insert minority group here* that they should be offended.

My view on this breaks into two categories: legal and personal. Legal-wise, I have no issue with keeping the name Redskins. It's Daniel Synder's team. He can call his team anything he likes, just as long as the league approves of the name. But on a personal level, I think they should change the name. The term is a racial slur against Native Americans. Was it the intention? No, but some Native Americans, whether we want to admit it or not, are offended by the name. There's no question about it. If they simply change the name to the Warriors, Sioux, Reds, etc then there wouldn't be any controversy and Synder wouldn't have to deal with the PR disaster he's currently facing.

If you look at the big picture, why does it matter if the Redskins change their name? It doesn't change the roster or coaching staff. Sure there might be some short-term losses, but in the overall picture, you might bring in more revenue because you wouldn't be alienating any customers.

Well I don't think the Redskins are hurting for customers, but they'll most likely get hounded to death by political correctness crowd until they change their name.
