Report: Redskins considering franchise tag for Cousins in order to trade him
Esten McLaren Feb 4, 2018 7:39 AM
The Washington Redskins may not be willing to allow quarterback Kirk Cousins the freedom of reaching free agency.

The team is considering placing the franchise tag on Cousins in order to trade him so they can recover some of the compensation they sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Alex Smith, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cousins is set to hit free agency when the new league year opens March 14, and he's expected to be the marquee signal caller, and player, on the open market.

The Redskins sent a third-round pick in the 2018 draft and cornerback Kendall Fuller to the Chiefs for Smith earlier in the week. The franchise tag would allow them to explore a trade with a number of teams expected to be interested in Cousins.

Cousins' franchise tag is expected to be worth approximately $34.5 million against the cap in 2018, presenting a risk to the Redskins should Cousins delay signing or cause a hangup in any potential trade.

We might be able to make this work if Kirk doesn't decide to be a dick. Play chicken and refuse to sign it and see who blinks first. We cant carry his cap numbers for very long and he could wait us out. But if he waits us out he might miss out on going to a team he really wants as they move on without him. In the end, I doubt this works out for us at all. It's too late, damage has been done and the cards we hold are very weak.

Or we could just fire Bruce, cancel the trade with KC and kiss and make up with Kirk and sign a long term deal.

still own his rights because the tag was placed on him and they can still try and trade him

But if he doesnt sign the tag, how will any other team want to follow through with a trade?

Yeah but teams realize that redskins dont have a strong hand right now, i'm willing to bet at least one or two would be willing to wait them out

So an audacious move of trying to trade Cousins after the FO gave him a 'Fuck you, pal.' is dependent on Cuz not being a dick eh.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan with the possibility that very little can go wrong for the Skins.
