Very nice...but there's a real potential stumbling block there in asking for public money.

Developers said the public money would come from existing economic development funds and requires no new taxes or funds from the cash-strapped city. Detroit, the largest city in the country under state financial oversight, is struggling with a long-term debt that emergency financial manager Kevyn Orr believes is more than $17 billion.

That thing will go up just as fast as Ford Field did. Maybe faster. Dan Gilbert and Quickenloans is taking over Detroit. That place will be packed with thousands of young, rich bankers every night.

That certainly helps...but it's still taking money from the city. Of course it's a great idea for development in general, just hope people see that.

Odd, I was expecting them to pick up a veteran arena on the free agent market and turn it into a star.

Wow. What a slap in the face to the people who have stuck it out in Detroit. All the things that money COULD be used for and the use it on stadiums...

Stadiums being built in the face of other issues with public money irritate me anyway, but Detroit has taken it in the chops the last decade and is finally coming around. That money could REALLY be used for better things. And if a company wants to build it with their cash alone, fine. But I'd be asking what else are they going to do? Revitalize the area around the arena too?

They should name it Gordie Howe Arena.

No way he's the highest bidder for naming rights.

Oh man, that's funny - I hope they bring the audio guy from the Joe to the new arena, he's one of the best in the league at his craft.

Ughhh... what 43 said. If it were a guy in Houston or another boom town asking for public funds, it would be one thing... but Detroit is broke. Not cool.
