But this is basically price's fair value, very little surplus value if he has any injuries the next 3 years.

My point is that they could have found other ways to get rid of Price's contract that getting rid of a future Hall of Famer.

They simply didn't want to give up assets to dump Price and then wind up paying Betts nearly 40 million next year. It was a pure financial decision which ignored the sports and fandom aspect of the business.
