Right. They have to be careful about how they word these things because it can lead to major over reactions in an uneducated fan base. It's a thin line however, because player privacy sneaks in, so can't just be telling the specifics of an injury in a press conference. But think about even comparing those two injuries...clearly they are on two different planes, but for fans they were interpreted similarly at first.

I actually looked up the type of injury because I also saw the potential for it being a very serious manner, but because I didn't know I researched it. Never give alms to the ignorant that choose to stay that way. Just my opinion though.

Did they ever say the positioning of the fracture (for example you can fx the transverse process, the lamina, just in the body of the vertebrae)? I'm just curious, because that really is what makes the difference. But yeah, if the fx had ever become displaced, then it's a big deal. Displaced fx are the ones that can slip and cause paralysis and often require surgery (if not impeding the spinal cord). But you're right, and you were clearly responsible about it. No use in speaking angrily if you don't even know what you're talking about.

BTW, apparently Recchi said he was doing this to take pressure off of Chara before this game, and applauded the Habs MD. Just read that on twitter somewhere.

Take pressure off Chara? Recchi is a rickety old man, Chara is a 260 lb Norris winner. It sounds like backtracking to me.

#Bruins Recchi lauds #Habs MD Mulder, medical staff. Says comments made purely to take heat off Chara

I dunno...maybe he saw that Chara wasn't liking the pressure or something *shrugs*

I have yet to find any information regarding the actual positioning but from what I understood, not having a medical degree, is pretty much the same thing as you already said about the fact that had it been displaced there would have been much more long term repercussions. I saw some pretty nasty pictures of trauma as a result of being displaced though on accident, and some things the eyes just can't unsee lol

Yeah. So far I've only been involved in one cervical fracture. I've seen a few lumbar fractures, but those aren't the same issue usually. Luckily the one I saw actually didn't involve the spinal cord at all. It was at C1 (the atlas) which doesn't really coincide with the cord. It was very odd because he didn't have the normal signs and symptoms of a vertebrae fracture because there were no neurological symptoms...just a really bad head ache. Scary stuff still, because that's really high near the cranium.

That is scary, sounds lucky he/she didn't have to have a tracheostomy.
