I like how people have stated for years that the Sabres are not willing to pay players the money to come, or stay in Buffalo, or offer any player a long term contract, but now that they have done that, people are now saying that the Sabres are overpaying players, and that the contracts are too long.

Buffalo has had a bad reputation in the League for a long time now, and that has stopped players from even wanting to play here. Pegula is trying to change all that, and that requires him to spend some money to do it I'm afraid.

There is no better motivational tool to change people's minds than the all mighty dollar.

To be honest it could have been much better or worse. Marty Reasoner will be the Isles 4th line center at 1.35 million for the next 2 years. Garth also signed 2010 3rd round pick Kirill Kabanov to an ELC.

Ehrhoff would have been nice, but Buffalo gave him an insane signing bonus. Leino got a huge deal from them as well.

Like I said it could have been worse. I mean Philly gave Jagr 3.3 million. I thought 2 million for 1 year was too much. The Wings resigned Ericsson for over 3 million per for 3 years & gave Mike Commodore a contract. Eric Cole got over 4 million per. Tomas Fleischmann got the same. Sorry, but there are some crazy contract being handed out.

Apparently Garth isn't too thrilled with this UFA class so he's going to be patient. There won't be any offersheets from the Isles either.

Kings " what, huh, what is so special about today? Why is it every year people ask how we did on the first of July? Is there a sale on ribs for the 4th coming up?"

Leafs: Fuck you

On the day you make your pitch to the top FA, your GM is in Afgahnistan. Now that's commitment.

honestly, I think that was a ploy to keep Burke as far away as humanly possible.
They told him it was a truculence scouting mission.

the good...
- kept Bieksa. that was the key going into this summer.
- kept Higgins. Versatile, good skill.
- we have 8 solid d-men.

the bad...
- lost Ehrhoff. unfortunate, but that's fine. good for him.
- missed out on Cole, or other upgrade to line 2. they were all getting pretty hefty salaries, wouldn't have wanted to overpay (Fleishman, for example)

the unknown...
- gained Marco Sturm. i just don't know. can he regain the 25+ goal scoring form? not sure about that one.
- with Glass gone, we NEED someone able to fight Hordichuk/Eager, Carcillo, etc. paging Zenon Konopka!!!
- next priority has to be Hansen.

Caps = A

-Hamrlik is a great pickup, a big, rugged D-man is great.
-Varly was done here, so picks from a team where they will be high picks is great.
-Halpern is not only cheaper than who we lost (Gordon), but might be better and is a crowd favorite since he's a DC native.
-Ward - Not sure what to think b/c I don't know much about him or whether his playoffs were a sign of a prime-time guy/guy improving or just an aboration.

The question now is what happens next. We have too many wingers and too many defensemen, so clearly they are looking to trade or dump a few players. Whether that's a trade to free up cap to go after someone big, a big trade with Semin or Green, or just trading away some role players remains to be seen. There is clearly more that is going to be happening here, and we're just not sure what it is yet. Imagine the next few weeks will provide some answers. I think we're still going to see some sizable moves from the Caps.

For Ward, It's an overpayment, but I like him. He's the type of guy we want in the playoffs. There has to be something done because there isn't enough cap room left. Someone's getting moved. So with the job not being done, I'm going to give an INC. but its looking like it'll be a good grade when all is said and done

But you do have some pretty big gaps on D now that Wiz and Hammer are gone.

They are both good players and they will be missed but the Habs do have 7 defensemen under contract already. Markov, Gorges, Subban, Gill, Spacek, Weber, and Yemelin. Plus Nash and Diaz are thought to be ready to play if needed.

I liked Wiz but he was pretty much a replacement for Markov and now that Markov is back they let him go. Some people are angry at the choice but Wiz's knees are as iffy as Markovs are.

I think the Habs will miss Hamrlik, and unless Yemelin learns real quick they may miss him a lot. I would have liked Roman for another year.

Sharks get Handzus. Take him off a division rival, and gain a good player. I like it. We lose Eager, I actually liked him, but oh well.

I like the Zeus signing as well. We just need to get some speed up front now. Our PK should be much improved though.

My team did as expected. The Isles will have a lot of bulletin board material once again this year. With any luck they'll be healthy enough to make their opponents lives miserable & break a few possible playoff teams hearts by knocking them out of contention.:D:
