Flyers: B+

Positives:
Found someone to play on the PP!
Traded Versteeg!
Talbot is definitely an upgrade over Betts who is broken goods at this point
Traded Versteeg!
Jagr with the 1 year deal is medium risk-high reward, and can be a top 6 foward.
Lilja @ 750K is a steal and a good skating replacement for O'Donnell, whose slow legs got him in trouble way too much.
Did I mention we traded Versteeg!

Negatives:
Lost Leino, although he was way overpaid by Buffalo.
Lost out on Cole, although again he was way overpaid.
Jagr, if it doesn't work out, could become a locker room cancer, plus you overpaid for him.
You lose O'Donnell's grit and leadership.

Go! :target:

Sabres A+

Just because they actually did something on the positive side today instead of just lose their top players for nothing.

Plus I have a feeling that something big is still on the way.

Sorry Mark, Lilja is just as slow of foot at OD is - I saw first hand just how much of a pylon 5 on 5 he can be skating backwards, however - he's one of the best shot blockers and penalty killes out there, which is good, becaue Philly usually doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from the refs (now they really won't if Pronger wears the C)

Caps = A

-Hamrlik is a great pickup, a big, rugged D-man is great.
-Varly was done here, so picks from a team where they will be high picks is great.
-Halpern is not only cheaper than who we lost (Gordon), but might be better and is a crowd favorite since he's a DC native.
-Ward - Not sure what to think b/c I don't know much about him or whether his playoffs were a sign of a prime-time guy/guy improving or just an aboration.

The question now is what happens next. We have too many wingers and too many defensemen, so clearly they are looking to trade or dump a few players. Whether that's a trade to free up cap to go after someone big, a big trade with Semin or Green, or just trading away some role players remains to be seen. There is clearly more that is going to be happening here, and we're just not sure what it is yet. Imagine the next few weeks will provide some answers. I think we're still going to see some sizable moves from the Caps.

Their goal was to add size and a top six forward, they did that with signing Erik Cole. At first I thought it was a high price, and it is, but I think the term and the salary look better after seeing some of the other signings today.

Budaj is a good backup to Price that should have Price getting a bit more rest next season.

But you do have some pretty big gaps on D now that Wiz and Hammer are gone.

After watching them last year I think those are really good signings for the Capitals. Hamrlik especially, he very quietly moves the puck very well, hits, and is good defensively.

A for becoming an NHL team
C for potentially facing cap hell when their good players become good. Everyone's basically on a 4-year contract.

Leafs: Fuck you

On the day you make your pitch to the top FA, your GM is in Afgahnistan. Now that's commitment.

Sabres: B-

Now first realize that every year up until now in recent memory they have received and incomplete for not even showing up.

Got a nice gritty role player in McCormick, but way overpaid him. He's worth about 900,000 and we signed him to a 3 year $1.2 million per contract.

Got a good young offensive winger in Leino who is most likely going to be a 30 goal scorer coming up. But again, overpaid for him. A $3 or $3.5 million cap hit over 6 years would have been alot easier to swallow when we prolly could have locked up richards for an 11 year deal with a cap hit of around $6 million.

In Summation, the Sabres have improved in leaps over last year and are definately a playoff team now, but we are still very weak down the middle.
Also with all the new long term contracts that hit the books are looking at having to sign 5 forwards and depending on how our RFA offers pan out, up to 3 d-men and a goalie for 19 million. Remembering that we will be handing out big money to Myers and probably Ennis and most likely want Gaustad back for his faceoff ability.

Flyers - B (so far)

Today isnt over. I like the Jagr move. A little more money than I expected but hey, its Jagr.

Dislike the Talbot move. We dump carcillo to sign carcillo.

Lilja....meh

Hopefully (or maybe not hopefully), MORE TO COME

Caps are not done...can't be. They did nit trade a first rounder for Brouwer to not sign him.

However, so far...

If they know Poti is retiring, I say B, as I like the halpern move, don't mind losing Gordon and Varly and like Ward. However, I think we payed a bit much for Ward and gave Hamerlik one year to many.

If they don't know that Poti is retiring, and they can't move Semin or Schultz and end up losing Alzner and Brouwer because they had to have a couple 30 year olds....F+

I think McPhee is smart though an wouldn't sacrifice Alzner and Brouwer for Ward and Hamerlik, so I feel ok right now.

overpaid him.

overpaid for him.

When your owner is a Billionaire, there is no such thing as "overpaid."

Just be glad the Sabres are actually the ones making headlines this year instead of being the laughing stock of the NHL again.

The Sabres are going to be a much better and improved team over last year, and that's all that matters.
