Will he stay or will he go?

It’s the question Toronto Raptors fans have been wondering ever since Kawhi Leonard was acquired last offseason in a blockbuster trade.

A free agent at season’s end, the Los Angeles native has long been thought to have an eye on returning to Southern California. Those rumours only intensified in January when Kawhi bought a $13.3 million mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, south of LA.

As the Raptors compete in their first-ever NBA Finals, it’s still the elephant in the room. The team has done as well as anyone could have imagined, and Kawhi has been the best player in the NBA playoffs.

But ultimately, it’s up to Kawhi.

On Monday, we got a glimmer of hope from TSN 1050 radio host Michael Landsberg.

“We have heard he has purchased a property in Toronto,” said Landsberg during an interview with Truehoop analyst David Thorpe. “We’ve heard this now from two different sources, indicating there’s something there.”

If true, that’s obviously a major indication that Kawhi will stay in Toronto.

“Everyone that I’ve talked to that knows [Kawhi] and is connected to that group, they all agree to the idea that the Raptors have done what they needed to do (to re-sign Leonard),” Thorpe said. “That doesn’t mean he can’t change his mind, of course he can, but as it stands today it’s hard to imagine that he would go somewhere else.

“Now he’s not going to sign a long-term deal (with the Raptors), I wouldn’t think. He doesn’t have to. But it’s fair to guess he’s going to give at least a year or two more to Toronto to continue that relationship and see where it goes.”

There will be no shortage of teams lining up to sign Kawhi in free agency this summer, including the Los Angeles Clippers, whose head coach was fined $50,000 last week for tampering.

Who cares. That stuff is nonsense and shouldn't be factored into Kawhi's potential free agency decision.

The real news is Jimmy Butler posted an Instagram pic with him wearing PURPLE AND GOLD kicks. Butler to the Lakers CONFIRMED

Interesting.

I would think a player with Kawhi's injury history would probably be wise to sign the full supermax contract.

1 more injury season at the wrong time could really impact his future money.

Maybe Kawhi doesn't care as much about that, but I would be a a bit surprised if he signs less than a 3+1 with a player option.

There were reports last fall that he had bought a home here.

Also, Landsberg is a doofus who looks like he's melting.

A news radio station did a real estate registry check yesterday for anybody with the last name Leonard having purchased property in the region lately and other than a couple of small houses in the suburbs there was no match.

There are rumors that Jimmy is buying a $6M house in the Philly area too. Of course, they are tracking that rumor back to a UPS guy and most are doubting it.

The Twitter Rumor is that Jimmy Butler Bought a $6 Million House in Ambler - Around Ambler

The report says that he also bought a house in an LA suburb.

Maybe he's going to play in LA and Toronto? :noidea:

The super rich use other entities to buy real estate, like trusts and LPs so that's not necessarily dispositive

He previously bought a home in Rancho Santa Fe (San Diego suburb). Some people apparently think all of SoCal is LA, lol.

It would be more than a 2 hour commute from RSF to LA depending on traffic. That purchase was for the off season regardless of where he plays.

Agreed. Trying to point that out to some of these talking heads on TV is futile, though. "Oh, he could take a helicopter to practice and on game day"....as if that sounds just like Kawhi's style, lol.

Yeah, but just about anywhere in LA to anywhere else in LA takes several hours under normal circumstances, doesn't it?

An LA kid does not just buy a house in Canada, though. It's not exactly a spot for your second home.

You would (logically) buy a second home in LA, where you are from and where your family resides.

Fwiw, he doesn't specifically have to have his name on it. For example, a Trust or an LLC that he owns could buy all the property and he just lives there. Rich and/or famous do that for this very reason; privacy to prevent any old person entering their name in some data base and finding all their info. So there could be some company out there with an obscure name you'd never think of buying up property and the controlling owner of said company is Kawhi Leonard but you'd never know it

Nah. Traffic in LA is bad but where Kawhi is, he would have to drive through north San Diego then drive completely through Orange County before he even got to LA County. So add a good hour and half commute before he even reaches "LA".

I've no room to talk as a New Yorker...

We've got some relatives out in Rancho C/Fontana, and we've done a bit of driving on the 15 between there and Temecula/Murrieta. All that's outside of LA though. I have avoided downtown LA since the late 90's

If he continues laying an egg like he did last game then I would request he leave. Not stay.

Can't even keep HCA going up against a depleted Warriors team? Pfftttt
