I like Tim Kurkjian, but this seems like gibberish to me.

Thoughts on possible return for Darvish in a trade...

TK: I would think if they were to move him in a pennant race and he were completely healthy, they would have to get overwhelmed for him, and my guess would be you would go, "wow, they got a lot for him." But you can't trade him, even with free agency coming up - you can't trade him without getting overwhelmed. He's too good.

Also, is he saying "if the Rangers are in the pennant race?" or just a trade to a team in the race, regardless of how the Rangers are doing? It's vague.

I think the context is the Rangers as sellers. If we are in the hunt even for a WC you keep your TORP.

Didn't get a chance to get on here last night, but JD's trip to Japan to scout Otani is being widely reported. It's nothing more than a daydream, but Darvish and Otani in the rotation? :omg:
I think signing Darvish is the first step towards signing Otani. Now they have to keep on stepping even after signing Darvish, but Otani is a Darvish fan.

I haven't kept up with how the signings out of Japan are handled now.

So, my question is, is Otani a true FA, or does the team he plays for have his rights?

Rangers GM Daniels travels to see Babe Ruth of Japan

So basically, any team that posts the $20m fee has a shot, and there's a salary cap for international players under 25. The Rangers can't offer more money, officially, than any other club. Establishing a relationship, it seems, would be paramount here.

Quote of note: "The Rangers, though, might have an inside edge: Otani and Darvish are friends and off-season training partners. Otani considers Darvish to be his mentor."

In other words... lock up Darvish, and you might get another Japanese superstar in the fold as well.

I thought above the posting fee is a sealed bid. Forgot how that works but the Rangers sealed bid was the highest and how we got Darvish.

It's different now, if I'm not mistaken.

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure. But it did seem I read where the posting fee is different now, I am just unsure what's what.

But it seems you have a pretty good grasp on this, so I'm on board partner. And thanks again.

Just looked it up. Once a player is posted, the player is free to negotiate with any team that posted the $20m fee. The player has 30 days to agree to a MLB contract, at which point his rights return to his Japanese team.

Due to Otani's age (under 25), there will be a salary cap in place, which should make negotiations interesting.

Honestly not a big deal to me.......Somebody has to man the position. Why not him for a night? It's not like we've had anyone step up and earn the spot on a nightly bases have we?

Right on pardner. The line up has been different almost every night. The 4 hole means nada if 1-3 doesn't reach base so that's why it is imperative that 1-3 is priority right now. Walks singles and doubles have become a lost art. HR or nothing. I like Choo Elvis and Luc (1-3)at the moment. Don't really see the importance of clean up till the 1-3 is resolved.

DT mouthing off. Over and out.

If he was in Jon Daniels' spot, Yu Darvish says he 'absolutely would' go to Japan to see Shohei Otani | SportsDay

Right-hander Yu Darvish seemed unfazed by general manager Jon Daniels' scouting trip to Japan this week in which he looked at highly-regarded pitcher Shohei Otani.

"If I was him, I would absolutely go and see him," Darvish said Saturday. "He is the best player in Japan. [Daniels] loves to see the best players. And he wants to build a great team."

But Daniels' scouting trip could have implications on Darvish's future. Darvish can be a free agent after the season and so far there have been no substantive talks with the Rangers. If the Rangers decide to pursue Otani, the chances for an extension with the Rangers seem even less likely. Daniels and Darvish did talk via text during the scouting trip.

"He ate good," Darvish said. "He sent me some picture of food he was eating there. ... [About the contract], that's something I can't control. It's not my decision."
