AD has always stated that he would play for the Rams as long as McVay was the HC. Now that AD is done, does this mean McVay will return the favor and be next to retire? Just a thought.

It depends on the specific clauses of the contract but generally speaking, this is the explanation:

When a player retires, their contract is paused. If you sign a 4 year deal, retire after one year, and then a year later decide you want to come back, the team still has you under contract for the remaining three years of your deal. If you come back two years after retirement, they still have you for the remaining 3 years. If you come back 10 years later, they still have you for the remaining 3 years.

For that reason, future year guarantees are not paid out once you decide to retire.

Retired players are placed on the reserve/retired list. That means they aren't a part of the 90/75/53 man rosters, and their salary doesn't count against the cap. But if that player comes back from retirement, they have to be able to fit them in (or they can release/trade them away).

Accelerated cap hits from a signing bonus are treated the same for retirement as they are for a player being cut. So if you sign a 4 year deal with a $10M signing bonus, that means your cap hit from the signing bonus for each year is $2.5M. If the team cuts you after one year, they've got $7.5M left of signing bonus cap charges that have to be paid the year you get cut. It works the same with retired players, though the team may try to recoup some of that signing bonus if you retire early on.

So, the period of official transaction state is like 30 days. So AD's guaranteed money is not counted toward the cap this year.

Other answers have covered most of it pretty well, but I'll add this. Signing bonuses are prorated over the life of the contract (max 5 years of proration). If a player retires the team can ask for portions of the money back. Or the team can sue the player. I don't know if this has ever gone to court. Sometimes the team lets them keep the money. Occasionally a player pays it back voluntarily.

Examples: Chris Borland voluntarily paid back 3/4 of his signing bonus because he played only one year of his 4 year rookie contract. Meanwhile, Marshawn Lynch kept his full signing bonus from the extension he signed in 2015. Seattle did not ask for it back.

I think the Rams will let AD have the money as a retirement present. I doubt the Rams will ask back any signing bonus prorated for this year.

Yea. After the Rams get their big LT in Rounds One and Two, they will be forced to go for either an EDGE or a DT. This draft is not as big on DT's as there are OT's so they may wait until the Third to start working on the D-Line. The remaining FA's are def not AD replacements and def not worth spending anymore money.

The Rams will have to go to the draft on this one until next year when more FAs will be available. Like I stated before, the Rams are now going to be in the same boat to fill AD's vacancy as they were for Whitworth when he retired. It might be a couple three years or so to get back close to what we had with AD.

I agree redskinsfan but if you ask around the league, I am quite sure many QB's are exhaling knowing they won't have to face AD again especially Russell Wilson and Jimmy G.
