Question regarding the 1 game playoffs?

If your team loses in that 1 game garbage, do you actually feel like your team made the playoffs? I know I wouldn't. The playoffs in Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey will always be a best of 5/7 series and it also should include at least one home game so your team gets to see you play in the playoffs.

How fair would it be for the Royals fans, for example to see their team go to Oakland, lose, and not possibly make the playoffs for another 25 years?

Why don't they change the 1 game playoffs to a best of 3? 1-1-1?

I would certainly hope our FO isn't incredibly incompetent for another 25 years- god knows it has been a horror show of stubbornness and a lack of accountability- fans can't tell Glass what to do even if they don't show up...

Anyways though, it is a playoff game simply because it is not the regular season- nor is it a true play-in/tiebreak like a theoretical game 163. However, what irritates me is that it acts as if it is a play-in... hence the thread. If MLB does make the WC's a 3 game set, they are going to have to tweak other items in the schedule in some form or fashion in my opinion.


Would only seem reasonable, to me anyways, that the progression of a postseason would look like this.


1-3-5-7-7


Play-in/Tiebreaker, WC, AL/NLDS, AL/NLCS, World Series.

All you need is 4 days at most to complete a best of 3. Honestly they don't even need a day off unless it is a East Coast/West Coast match-up like the Pirates/Giants possible match-up would be.

I agree with your overall premise that 1 game is silly in baseball. I think in a perfect world, they would play a 3 game series Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday. However, with the chance that there could be multiple tie-breaker games that would push that back, they don't want to give the team that is waiting for them a full week off. That would be a disadvantage to the higher seeded team to sit there and wait while the winner of the wild card series stays on a normal baseball schedule. It already feels like the Division Series takes forever to start, and it's only 3 or 4 days right now.

Start the season a day or two earlier, each team has two scheduled doubleheaders per season. They would never do the second part, but it would help.

Agreed it should be a 3 game set.

It should be 3 games.... and no I wouldn't feel like my team made the post season after a 1 and done.

Making it a 3-game series is actually a disadvantage to the Division winners. Baseball is a game of momentum, and having the "winners" sit around for 4-5 days can cool their momentum in a REAALY big way.

The first team to clinch a playoff spot has not won the World Series since 1998.

I personally do not see it as we are "stuck with the 1 game WC situation." The WC, as it is built today, is a booby-prize. You have a chance, but you are definitely a second-class-citizen.

I actually want it to be taken a step further. I want the #1 seed to have a 4-1 home-field advantage (2-1-2) against the WC winner. This gives the #1 seed extra power that teams will want to play for in the regular season. Granted, this will NEVER happen. It has too much of a video-game quality to it.

I agree that it should be a best of 3 if they are going to have it. 1 game is just weird and doesn't even let you enjoy it really.

Lucky for me, if god forbid my team every stops being complete dogshit. We will almost certainly only make the playoffs as a division winner anyways. Although I guess the Central has been involved in this format the last 2 seasons now.

I don't mind it. it really makes winning your division important. before the 1 game playoff there really wasn't much of benefit to wining your division. detroit and kc wouldn't be going hard right now.

I agree that it makes winning your division more important but a best of 3 series is the way to go.

If you want to keep the 1 game BS, do the country a favor and don't call it the playoffs because it is not.

Just call it a play in game which is actually what it is.
