The QFTMs are usually in the politics forum, but todays question is a baseball question and I dont want the douchenozzle forum content cops getting in a hissy.

So, with a 60-game schedule, it will only take 186 plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. If someone was ever going to hit .400 again, this would be the season to do, even with the asterisk that would accompany it.

You could argue that the defensive shift and specialized relief pitchers have all but eliminated any chance of a .400 hitter. Over the course of 502 plate appearances needed to qualify in a full season, I would reluntantly agree. But over 186 PAs? Thats doable. And especially, in an era where pitchers are mainly trying to keep the ball in the park but dont make much effort to prevent singles.

A young, fast, disciplined hitter could do it.

But who? Who are the best candidates?

Since 2000, only one player has hit over .400 in the first 60 games of a season (Chipper Jones), so it's probably not likely to happen this year.

Bellinger was at .376 after 60 games last year (and that was the highest in 10 years)

He'd probably be my top choice to make a run this year. If Ichiro was still active and in his prime, he'd be the easy choice.

How about a .500 OBP? Mike Trout might make a run at that.

Yep. Ichiro, Gwynn, or Boggs. Going further back: Brett, Carew, Clemente.

The fact that it is only 60 games might make some players temporarily give up the lift in their swing and try for .400. I doubt if Chipper nor Bellinger envisioned a huge BA season, nor necessarily sacrificed power to maintain a high BA. But it could happen this year, someone actually trying to place hit. "Hit em where they ain't."

A .500 OBP besides Trout? Yelich could do it. He's been so hot since moving to Milwaukee. Hell, Yelich could be a threat for .400 BA and .500 OBP both. A triple crown isn't out of the question either. Only thing that has slowed him down is his back. If he stays healthy for 60 games, which seems perfectly reasonable, we might see a truly monster season from him.

You mean the upswing in Corona Virus positives that was absolutely expected this summer, back when we took the pre-emptive measure to shut down the country in March? The whole idea was to spread out cases that required hospitalizations. So far it has worked.

Yeah, I see. Do you see how it has spread over a 4-month time capsule? From heavily populates cities/states to less populated cities/states? Isn't that the nature in which one would expect a virus to spread?

I'd eat them both. Not sure how to prepare snake. I'd have to get the cook from the Lonesome Dove cattle drive to show me.

yup

but i'm telling you, NFLPA head calls it "non essential" and the MLB commish had to FORCE them to play by evoking that clause. i just have a bad feeling we get 20 games in, a team loses its starting infield to positive tests, and they say "cant do it guys, sorry".

i just think we will see all major sports go on hiatus for a year.

Yes. I can see that happening. Also can see the NFL on collision course with the fall flu season that starts feeling its effect on the NFL by week 5 and tickets selling for pennies on the dollar by week 8.

IMHO the defensive shift should HELP a players average, if only they would get off their lazy ass's and learn how to go opposite field, or maybe {GASP!} lay down the occasional bunt, and take 2 bases.
Also, the hitting coaches and managers are fuckin lazy for not MAKING the overpaid prima donnas LEARN how to do both of these things.
They'd either pick up 40 points on their average or the shifts would end.....shocking.
