Mainly because Smith isn't the answer to the long term question. The team wins when he starts and not because he starts, is probably the best way to look at it.
By him not sucking, you guys win.

You’d win the division again if he is your starter. Easily imo. No additional salary needed. No spending of draft capital. Just going with what you’ve got.

Then they don't they win when he doesn't start?

I think he is the reason they win. He's simply an "at risk" QB when he does play.
He’s a lot better than Marcus Mariota, I know that.

I’d try and sign Trubisky over MM.

I'm indifferent. I'm not gonna pitch a fit, but im not going to throw a party either. College game tape is electric. Fits the mold of the QB this offense is built for. Just depends on what the compensation would be.

Have to say no trading for Mariota he would cost 20 million against the cap and a draft pick

I know it drives some people nuts and I know he isn't coming back but there is a guy in Minnesota that has played 47 of 48 games (missed one because the HC held him out) has thrown for 12,000 yard, 91 TDs versus 29 Ints. Some folks here and elsewhere are talking about signing a QB who in his career has thrown for 77 TDs, 45 Ints and 13,400 yards. :noidea: just saying ... :pound::trash:

Given the singular choice of trading for and signing Marcus Mariota vs. staying with Allen and Beer dude, I choose the latter while hating having to do so.

What does all the above BS mean ? Most likely people take that as excuses . Or they could see maybe he wasn’t as bad as they think

The elite QBs are obviously great and the stinkers are terrible. However, for most QBs, their success is largely based on their surroundings and the situation they are placed in. Mariota, if he can stay healthy, can have success in the NFL as a starter. I think it would be a good move by the WFT

It's crazy to think MM wasn't a starter this past season. I can't believe TN let him go. I don't think he was the problem.

My concern is less about his capabilities and more about his inability to stay on the field.

It's crazy that IMO, because he's so boring and unwillingly to throw it deep...we forget he's a winner.
I dunno, maybe the OC just completely removes some plays, because teams know he won't scramble.
I believe the same, we win this division easily

rework his contract
Of course that's an option, the article mentions that, but you also don't want to lock yourself into a bad situation in which you're overpaying a backup starter monies, because you were desperate to get someone to be that starter.
