Every year we carve pumpkins with the grand daughters. By we, I mean they play around, scream and ignore me while I do all the icky work. Then they lay claim to "their" gourd.
Anyone else do this kinda stuff? Where do all them fancy pumpkin carvings come from?

My kids will be carving theirs tonight.

I've always done the dirty work in the past, but they claim they want to do it this year. I even splurged for some pumpkin carving tools so they don't have to use butcher knives.

I'll report on what actually happens later.

Some of the intricate uses of shading to create really detailed designs are amazing. Definitely takes a deft and artistic hand.

We just do the classic jack-o-lantern.

The kids draw what they want on a piece of paper and I carve it into the pumpkin.

This is what I did this time. They draw it up and I do the best of making the pumpkin look like what they wanted.

Ever since my boy was really little I bought those kits that you use to mark and cut out elaborate designs, some of which came out better than others. This year, he is now twelve, he and his friend wanted to use the kit and carve the pumpkin themselves while I was working nearby in the yard. They soon gave up on marking the pumpkin to cut out an elaborate design, going instead with the simple jack o lantern. Good times.

My wife is awesome with those little carving tools. If I knew where all our pics from when the kids were little I would post some she had done.

I guess ours were taken with the 35mm. I'd have to find them and scan them. Not quite that ambitious at the moment.
