The whole 35+ contract confuses me. I thought there was benefits to signing a player that was older to a long contract. At least I remember when they signed him it looked like they were arguing that they wanted his contract to be recognized as being a 35+ contract? I dunno its all confusing to me.

they did not want it to be a 35+ contract. that means if he retires early we still get his cap hit. also, some teams want 35 year old guys to sign 1 year deals with incentives which do not count against the cap.

i was just arguing that i would rather have pronger with that contract than a lot of other defensemen.

The 35-and-Older Clause:

When a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year contract, his average salary is counted against the team's salary cap during every year of the contract, even if the player retires before the contract is up.
If the player is sent to the minor leagues, his cap hit is reduced by $100,000.

If he wants 35 when he signed the contract I dont see how its a 35+ contract. It doesnt say if a players contract takes effect after the player turns 35. I dunno I guess we'll see how it goes.

they said it is when the contract takes effect. there was confusion about this. reporters asked the flyers if they were trying to avoid the 35+ contract.

Id rather have Pronger with that contract than Martin and his contract. Why did Martin only play 22 games last season?

Who says that? I'm reading the rule clear as day and no where does it say "when the contract takes effect" you cant just add to the rule when its already written.

also have to consider the cap keeps going up.. surprised nobody mentioned that.. if it goes up 2 mil per season the cap will be around 70 mil when pronger is 41 and 42.. obviously it might not keep going up, but you gotta think it going up in todays economy is a good sign

not that i wanna defend anything pronger.. i respect him and think he's a good player, but i cant just ignore my role as the only flyers fan that doesn't like chris pronger

i remember when it was going on.. he counts even after he retires.. and this is the NHL mate, where if the ref 'intends' to blow the whistle it stops play

and how old is lidstrom and how much does he make?

Lidstrom has been a better defenseman than Pronger. Well, maybe not now, but Lidstrom at 35 is better than Pronger at 35. It is fair to speculate that Lidstrom at 40 will be better than Pronger at 40. Also, Lidstrom isn't locked up for a lengthy term, which is the issue at hand.

Id rather have Pronger with that contract than Martin and his contract. Why did Martin only play 22 games last season?

Martin played 22 games last season because he's a hockey player, and like most hockey players, he suffered an injury at one point in his career.

------

IF Pronger is even playing at 42, I have a hard time believing he'll be worth $5 million a season. BUT he's worth more than $5 million right now, so that kinda makes the deal worth it. It evens out. The only problem is if he should happen to retire or get hurt (it happens with older guys) and can't play. Then Philly is in a tough situation. If he retires at 40, which is certainly not unheard of, then Philly has $5 million locked up on an empty roster spot. I have a hard time believing Pronger would sign the contract with no intention of playing it through though. So as long as he doesn't get hurt, I'd expect him to be out there at 42. It's a risky contract, but you gotta make those sometimes. Hopefully for the Flyers it works out for the best.

If he gets hurt, he sits on LTIR. The Flyers have a history with that.)

I think the issue is if 39 year old Pronger gets hurt and decides his body can no longer handle a NHL season and retires. You can't put a retired player on LTIR.

Mike Rathje spent over three full seasons on LTIR at the end of his career with the Flyers. I'm sure the same could be done with Pronger if he's hurt and can no longer handle an Nhl season. If a retired player can't be put on LTIR, then he simply doesn't have to officially retire.

You're all making a big deal out of nothing...lol

I would hope the CBA has some sort of language to ensure this doesnt happen. If not I assume we will see Hossa, Franzen and several others on LTIR in the near to semi near future.

wow penguins fans are very interested in pronger. you just signed martin at 5 mil and michalek at 4 mil. lidstrom is 40 and makes over 6 mil and is worth it. are you telling me that pronger at 40 will not be worth what martin is making now? or 1 mil more than michalek? you have to be kidding.

A little sensative? The Pens signed guys under 35 so if they retire nothing is lost. Lidstrom is and has been on 1 year deals for a few seasons so pretty much the same boat as the Pens situation. Pronger is signed until he is 42 which looks like a good salary now but could possibly turn in to a terrible one. It is a valid point, no reason for FLyers fans to feel like this is some sort of attack.

i am not sensitive. just seems like you guys are really trying to find something wrong which is not. pronger is in great shape and is durable. i am just saying that i would rather have him at 5 mil when he is 42 than having martin now at the same price. i think pronger at 42 would still be a second pairing type of guy. maybe even better.

he was 35 this year and put up numbers similar to his career best. on a team who just got into the playoffs on the last day and a team that went through 7 goalies and played 5.

it's dangerous because they could be on the hook 'if' something happens. but it's a good cap hit for the now. /thread.
