NEW YORK (AP) -- NHL fans have tuned in to hockey's return to television.

NBC's broadcast Saturday earned the highest preliminary rating for a non-Winter Classic regular-season game since 2002. The network said Sunday its regional coverage of Blackhawks-Kings and Penguins-Flyers averaged a 2.0 overnight rating. That's up 67 percent from the average for regular-season games on NBC last year.

Yeah I read that earlier today. Not bad at all, the ratings have been going up the last few years. Maybe now that more kids are playing hockey in more non traditional states this will help. People like to root for the hometown hero.

Dash I think they said the US Junior team had players from 12 or 14 states. It used to be just a handful of northern states.

Boss, you're seeing guys from California, Texas, Ohio, and Florida on the US Junior team these days. I think there was a kid drafted from Biz's neck of the woods (North Cackalacky) a couple of years ago. The times, they are a'changin'.

The on ice product was at times cringe worthy, but the league learned something from the NBA lockout last season - a shortened season will drum up more support than a full one. Pent up demand with crazy schedules in a compressed time frame equals playoff action each and every night.
