12. Seattle Mariners
I could go college arm here for the third straight draft, but I’m not sold on the future roles of Ty Madden and Ryan Cusick, leading me to take a different kind of risk this time. I would have leaned McLain here if he were available.
Pick: Harry Ford, C — North Cobb HS (Ga.)
Ford has plus speed and at least average power potential to go with the tools to stick behind the plate for 10-plus seasons. But his agility and athleticism should allow for a move to second, third or the outfield if the bat figures to be special and the club doesn’t want the labor of developing his catching skills to hold him back.

18 | Charlie Saum | C | Thousand Oaks | Defensive standout behind the plate. Good receiving skills with strong wrists and a rocket arm that shows off plenty of carry to it's target. At the plate, he uses all fields with a neutral stance. Line drive oriented swing. Gap power right now with frame to add more muscle. Good chance he stays behind the plate. |
Ryan Wrobleski | C | Dallas Baptist | Advanced college catcher who should be able to stick at the next level thanks to athleticism and very soft hands/ability to frame. Hit .271 with some pop in his first year at Dallas Baptist and showed the ability to drive the ball with intent into the opposite field gap. |
Satchel Norman | C | Sarasota | Strong actions behind the plate with an ideal body to stick there long-term. Shows present athleticism and arm strength. At the plate, it's high-hands pre-load that he sometimes struggles to get into a consistent loaded position for his swing. There's above average bat speed, but bat path inconsistencies have impacted hit tool. A lot to like in what could be in Norman at the next level. |
Kris Bow | RHP | Southern Nevada | Great pitchers body and consistent mechanics. One of the hardest throwers in the class. Can touch 99. Slider, at it's best, has depth and sweep. Commands both pitches well. Potential for a 70 fastball and a 60 slider. |
Cardenas | C | UCLA | An athletic receiver behind the plate, Cardenas hit well his Freshman season at UCLA. At the plate he has a contact oriented approach, with a somewhat inside out right-handed swing. He was a Freshman All-American in 2019, but didn't show much down the Cape last summer, or early in 2020. If Cardenas can improve upon his freshman season in 2021 he has a chance to move up into the back end of the day one conversation. |
83 | CJ Rodriguez | C | Vanderbilt | Hit-over-power catcher who's shown a good ability to put the bat on the ball at Vanderbilt. It's below average power, inhibited by lower launch angles and a flat swing. Behind the plate, he's an above average receiver of the ball with a good arm. All around good player who likely projects as a platoon at the next level thanks to a lack of size and physicality. |
Carter Raffield | RHP | Clemson | Can shove a baseball. Electric heater 92-95/97 w/what looks like huge ext. for frame. FB rides + runs a ton. High 70s CB tunnels well; 50 now. CH flashed 55 in HS; great sep. @ ~83. Non-arm injury in '19, bullpen in 2020. 1.13 ERA. 7K/7 IP |
Thomas Schultz | RHP | Vanderbilt | Split between long-relief and short starts, Schultz was a dynamo for Vanderbilt his freshman year where he posted a 0.66 ERA and an opponent batting average of .184. His 17 Ks in 13.2 innings also stand out. At 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, Schultz is certainly built like you want to see them. He does a good job of repeating his operation and coming over the top, similar to Doug Fister. |
Rob Gordon | SS | Ben Franklin Academy | 60 grade glove at SS with some of best hands in the class and shows the ability to make strong, accurate throws from any arm angle. Bat has been trending up over the past year flashing as a plus tool with improved barrel control and gap power to all fields showing up consistently. Skinny 6’1” frame that will fill out as he matures with more power coming. |
43 | Ryan Gilbert | OF | Kenston | Present 70 raw, potential for future 80. Might have the best raw power in the prep class. Has hit balls in BP 109 with wood, 118 with metal. Hit a homer in game at PG WWBA that was 107.8 highest EVof entire tournament. Also an average, maybe a tick above average runner. Some Joey Wiemer in the package. Hit tool has some question marks, but pure strength and ability to impact the baseball is undeniable. |
Jack Perkins | RHP | Louisville | Another arm in the long line of guys who haven't posted enough innings yet. Perkins comfortably has first round stuff. Worked as a swingman in 2020 due to recovering from TJ. Fastball generally sits 92-94, but has touched higher pre-injury. Firm slider is potential 70 offering with consistent spin rates in excess of 3000 RPMs. Still developing a fringe average changeup which will ultimately dictate his role at the next level. Needs to focus on mechanics, specifically getting his arm in a better position at foot strike. Perkins is next-in-line to take a rotation spot at Louisville should an arm struggle or go down with injury. For now, he's slated to be the swing man or handle some Tuesday starts. Still, the stuff is loud and will be the key should he ascend into day one consideration again. |
Brooks Gosswein | LHP | Bradley | 5 pitch lefty up to 96, easy effort, 6 breaking ball, 55 slider, 50 ch. Made big jump in stuff and delivery over baseball shutdown. Has projection left at 6'2 205, elite level athlete. Arm can be late at times. Needs to focus on staying back. |
Dominic Keegan | 1B | Vanderbilt | Athletic, strong and can really drive the baseball. Catcher by trade, Dom has also developed as a first baseman. Draws high marks for his competitive fire. Shows power to opposite field gap as well as pull-side. |
Brandon Birdsell | RHP | Texas Tech | One of the best players in the entire country as a HS sophomore... has slowly pumped his stuff back up since 2016. Transfer from San Jac, Birdsell now sits 93-98/99 with serious ride on the heater. Threw 21 innings punching out 45 guys in 2020. Can get hit around a little bit, but the stuff is really good. Cutter/Slider at 88, mixes in a curveball that's fringy in the low 80s. Needs to work on developing a distinct shape for the pitch. Changeup is a work in progress and not part of the arsenal currently. |
Riley Tirotta | 3B | Dayton | Had a big 2019, jumping on the map as a sophomore. There's plenty of extra-base hit pop in this bat and the body screams pro potential. There's above average pop here and advanced actions at the plate and on the dirt. Tirotta has a big fan base in baseball and there's a lot of people who believe in the final product being big here. He's a good bet to become the A-10 Player of the Year. |
Michael Robertson | OF | Venice Senior | Impact bat with long term tools in CF. Potential for 60 grade power and speed tools with tons of development in front of him. Ran a 6.3 at PG National with some of the best Diamond Kinetic numbers in the class. Tons of projection left with a very high ceiling. |
Hunter Parks | RHP | Florence-Darlington | South Carolina commit has almost no chance of making it to campus. 90-95/98 with good spin on all pitches. Throws a lot of quality strikes. Big time riding fastball. Low 80s slider flashes solid average with sweep and projects nicely... plus at times. A little slower changeup acts as good separation, has shown solid feel for the pitch. Flashes consistency more and more. Heavy fade. Parks has a super-projectable delivery with athleticism and big arm speed. Projects well as a starter at the next level. |
