1B: Miggy; Goldy
2B: Kipnis; D.Gordon
SS: Drawing blind: Got Bogaerts this time...; Crawford
3B: Donaldson; Carpenter
LF: A.Gordon; Holliday
CF: Cain; Pederson
RF: Trout; Harper
DH: Cruz

I am quite serious about drawing blind from Semien, Bogaerts, Miller, A.Escobar, and Iglesias though. That AL SS spot looks to be kind of clustered together.

Cain and Gordon? I get both are good defensively, but neither is great offensively. Cain is probably slightly below average offensively actually.

Of course, this could (and likely will) change many times between now and next month...

NL
C - Posey (not close)
1B - Goldy (not close)
2B - Gordon (really a toss-up between Gordon, Wong and Panik)
SS - Peralta (Although, I am ignorant about Peralta's defense. Crawford is elite defensively, and close-ish offensively)
3B - Frazier (toss-up between Frazier and Carpenter)
OF - Harper, Pederson, Upton

AL
C - Vogt
1B - Fielder
2B - Kipnis
SS - Semien (Iglesias did not win only because he has 60 fewer ABs)
3B - Donaldson
OF - Cruz, Trout, Bautista
DH - F-You. I refuse to honor it.

Cain: .283/.338/.408
MLB league average: .251/.314/.397
CF league average: .263/.321/.395

He isn't great, but I wouldn't call him "below average"

I'd say you're ignoring the elephant in the room if you ignore their defense.

I'm not ignoring their defense. I both said they are good at defense. But you have to use a combination of both. IMO offense is much more important than defense is anyways.

He's 30th in OPS out of 60 qualified outfielders. That basically puts him at average. And he's a career .280 hitter with 5 homers a year. That doesn't belong as being an all star starter.

LF/RF are offense first positions. CF isn't. it's not really fair to compare a CF to a LF/RF.

In all fairness to Cain, he shouldn't be compared to just qualified outfielders, but all outfielders....and he's probably better than the overwhelming majority of non-qualified outfielders (many of whom aren't good enough to start), so that likely makes him an above average outfielder.

Not to mention, comparing him to all outfielders are comparing him to LFers and RFers, two positions that are virtually always more offensive than CF.

also, it's not like he's playing merely above average defense. most metrics (DRS, UZR, etc.) rate Cain as one of the defensive players in all of baseball.

I think the competition between Goldschmidt and Rizzo(and even AGonz is closer than you think). That said, I would go with:

C-Posey/Vogt
1B-Goldschmidt/Fielder
2B-Gordon/Kipnis(Altuve is close)
3B-Frazier/Donaldson
SS-Peralta/Bogaerts
OF-Harper/Upton/McCutchen & Trout/Cruz/Bautista

Yeah but when voting all the outfielders are lumped together. His OPS among AL outfielders is 16th. He honestly shouldn't even be an all star IMO.

This seems like it should be a poll question, where you can change your vote if you like and the poll closes at approx the same time as the MLB voting closes.
