The stat that jumped out last season also happened to flash in a negative way Thursday night. And it put Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and the offense in bad passing situations. From there, disaster occurred.

The Redskins were bad on first down, especially when running the ball. It’s what they must do well this season if they want to have success. They know it well, which is why they tried to revamp their offensive line. They know to help Griffin they must stay ahead of the chains -- getting four or five yards on first down to prevent obvious passing situations.

Last season, they ranked 21st in first-down runs. In 2012, they were first. Makes a huge difference.

Here’s what happened in Thursday’s 21-17 win over Detroit -- and I discuss only the starting offense because, well, it is the most important.

The Redskins managed just four yards on four first-down carries. It went like this: 1 yard (run), minus-1 (run), incompletion; no gain (run), minus-5 yards (penalty, illegal shift), three yards (run). Those are unacceptable numbers, and it put the offense, and Griffin, in bad spots.

Griffin threw passes when it was second-and-11; third-and-21; second-and-10; third-and-6; first-and-10 (penalty resulted); second-and-12; third-and-16.

That’s a lot of tough passing situations for Griffin and an offensive line missing its best player -- and with two young guys on the right side. You're then asking Griffin to be something he's not: a true pocket passer who can slice apart a defense by himself. He needs help. The Redskins know there’s no way they can survive operating this way and it showed on Thursday. To help Griffin, they want to run play-action -- that’s tough to do when the defense knows you won’t, or can’t, run the ball.

Look at Colt McCoy’s first drive: The run game produced a 24-yard gain and, two plays later, a 19-yarder. Next play: bootleg for 13 yards. Makes a difference. With the starters, first down made a big difference in a bad way.

When the QB takes a shot 2 seconds after receiving the snap what exactly are the coaches and the game plan supposed to do with that?

How about a quick slant or maybe even pulling the 'Franchise QB" before he gets hurt if the line is that porous.
I was not trying to troll just observing the RG3 is not a very good pocket passer IMO but if you only get a couple seconds nobody can live through that all night.

Maybe the observation should have been" Washingtons OL looked pitiful on passing downs resulting in RG3 barely able to drop back to pass before Detroit's pass rush overwhelmed him. Griffin who is coming of injury and trying to become a drop-back Passer first and a running QB 2nd was left running for his life and left the game with a concussion"
I like RG3 but it does not look good at this point IMHO

My thoughts:

1. Callahan will be extremely tough on his charges this week, #5 pick B.S. will be targeted for a lot of verbal abuse and deservedly so.

2. The organization will be actively seeking a starting caliber LT to back up TW.

3. Tough choices for SM this year because he's already stated his reluctance to give up on RGIII and has yet to give a vote of confidence on a HC who clearly is putting his QB in situations to fail.

4. Totally convinced that Griffin has lost confidence in the organization to field a supporting cast around him that resembles a professional one.

5. Jones is a lot quicker than Morris and will no doubt be getting a lot of opportunities in the regular season.

6. Tackling remains an issue and needs to be addressed yesterday!

7. The threat of rain may have been a factor, but attendance during camp and at last night's game appears to be a looming issue after 3-13 and 4-12 seasons and a gloomy outlook for 2015.

8. Defense on 3rd and long still remains an issue.

9. Impressed with R. Ross, C. Thompson, T. Williams (good battle for spot between these last two) J. Hamm, H. Bates and 2nd year in a row MVP T. Way.

10. Patience from fans and followers of this team will be tested again this season and mutineers should lower expectations. The biggest fan of this team and owner should learn how not to react to fans displeasure of another poor product in 2015 while keeping a muzzle on his yes man. (B. Allen)

This is a great breakdown of the problems that the first team faces. It is especially telling that the mindset is not favoring a run first type of attitude as is evidenced by putrid gains when they did attempt to run and worse a head coach who could not find it within himself to continue to run the ball when facing second and 11, second and 10, first and 10, and second and 12 situations. Small gains in those situations give you better chances on third downs.

The crappy part for all this is that they are going to make sure he passes the concussion test this week. Last thing they want is another QB starting against the Ravens #1 at this point. If they are hell bent on Griffin as the starter, having McCoy or Cousins look good against the Ravens #1 would be bad for the cause.

A quick slant? LOL, Guy was getting clobber on the fastest throw you can make, a one step drop quick throw. Virtually every throw he was hit in 2 seconds, literally, and it's not all pocket presence.

Again the coaches have to see what they have, they can't coddle Griffin by only playing him when Trent Williams is in the game. But if Trent was in the game he would have at least had a chance,

My biggest takeaway is that Griffin CANT possibly face Miami ONLY as a pocket passer with his tendencies and our young Oline.

Not that we didn't already suspect/know that.

Starting to realize RGIII doesn't have a body fit for the NFL

Or the head. He clearly contains the imagination if he even has an inkling of a thought that he's the NFL's best QB. We've probably all thought we were good enough to play in the NFL at one time. Unfortunately for Griffin. He's still thinking that in his 20s.

- Bit hit by Dunbar on a pass over the middle.
- Crawford with batted ball at LOS.
- Dunbar with great defensive play. Almost makes INT.
OFFENSE:
- Nice run by Mack Brown for 13 yards and 1st down.
*Redskins win 21-17.
Game Notes:
- Scherff started off about as bad as an offensive linemen could start off. His bad play was only trumped by Willie Smith in the 1st quarter. Could be great learning session in film tomorrow for the rookie.
- Morgan Moses looks like a totally different linemen this year - Playing very well in both pass pro and run blocking.
- Willie Smith is getting embarrassed out there. Doesn't look like he belongs on an NFL roster. So much appreciation for Trent Williams after watching this train wreck.
- Goldston flying around in 1st quarter making plays all over.
- Portis is so entertaining as a sideline reporter! Love this guy.
- Preston Smith is definitely learning from Junior Gallett. Was watching him in a track stance getting really low down by the goalline.
- Really liking Compton at TE.
- Matt Jones is just opposing his will on the defense in the 2nd quarter. Looks amazing!
- J Johnson not playing well at Safety. Had a few plays, but also whiffed on some tackles.
- Spencer beginning to show some skills at WR - still a bit raw though.
- Cousins going through progressions, extending plays, and throwing the ball on the money. Looks very good tonight, albeit against the 2nd and 3rd Lions defense.
- Houston Bates won't make the team, but damn, the kid is playing great.
- Dunbar may be a good PS candidate. Kid is showing some skills at CB.

you know what gets me ? last week the coach didnt give him enough reps according to some here on this board and i pointed out he got as many as his peers .

this week there is whining that he was left in there TOO long and he would have had less reps then week one

some of you all arent ever going to be pleased

the 1st team offense sucked vs the lions and everyone who took the field deserves the bashing they are getting

now the season is doomed because willie smith (a guy who wont make the team ) was a turnstile and Rg3 is a moron

how about we let this thing play out a little more before we collectively quit after 36 preseason snaps ?

the next game vs baltimore will add some more knowledge to this but lets be real until the games really start and we really start game planning and we really start playing our best guys we wont know how bad or good a team we have

i have us at 6-10 and that is about right to this point
