When the QB takes a shot 2 seconds after receiving the snap what exactly are the coaches and the game plan supposed to do with that?
Keim
The stat that jumped out last season also happened to flash in a negative way Thursday night. And it put Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and the offense in bad passing situations. From there, disaster occurred.
The Redskins were bad on first down, especially when running the ball. It’s what they must do well this season if they want to have success. They know it well, which is why they tried to revamp their offensive line. They know to help Griffin they must stay ahead of the chains -- getting four or five yards on first down to prevent obvious passing situations.
Last season, they ranked 21st in first-down runs. In 2012, they were first. Makes a huge difference.
Here’s what happened in Thursday’s 21-17 win over Detroit -- and I discuss only the starting offense because, well, it is the most important.
The Redskins managed just four yards on four first-down carries. It went like this: 1 yard (run), minus-1 (run), incompletion; no gain (run), minus-5 yards (penalty, illegal shift), three yards (run). Those are unacceptable numbers, and it put the offense, and Griffin, in bad spots.
Griffin threw passes when it was second-and-11; third-and-21; second-and-10; third-and-6; first-and-10 (penalty resulted); second-and-12; third-and-16.
That’s a lot of tough passing situations for Griffin and an offensive line missing its best player -- and with two young guys on the right side. You're then asking Griffin to be something he's not: a true pocket passer who can slice apart a defense by himself. He needs help. The Redskins know there’s no way they can survive operating this way and it showed on Thursday. To help Griffin, they want to run play-action -- that’s tough to do when the defense knows you won’t, or can’t, run the ball.
Look at Colt McCoy’s first drive: The run game produced a 24-yard gain and, two plays later, a 19-yarder. Next play: bootleg for 13 yards. Makes a difference. With the starters, first down made a big difference in a bad way.
How about a quick slant or maybe even pulling the 'Franchise QB" before he gets hurt if the line is that porous.
I was not trying to troll just observing the RG3 is not a very good pocket passer IMO but if you only get a couple seconds nobody can live through that all night.
Maybe the observation should have been" Washingtons OL looked pitiful on passing downs resulting in RG3 barely able to drop back to pass before Detroit's pass rush overwhelmed him. Griffin who is coming of injury and trying to become a drop-back Passer first and a running QB 2nd was left running for his life and left the game with a concussion"
I like RG3 but it does not look good at this point IMHO
Starting to realize RGIII doesn't have a body fit for the NFL
it looks to me that on 3 of those 6 hits Rg3 had something to do with it
Yeah, you could argue that.it looks to me that on 3 of those 6 hits Rg3 had something to do with it
