I hope we do get the deal done with Kirk and just get this out of the way. But why do I get the feeling there is a sector of the fan base that would rather see him play under the tag than be confirmed as our short/long term solution at the position??

Perhaps but they are probably in the minority (& really who cares - don't worry about other fans' opinions). All of the recent moves including locking up guys long term just help to make this a stronger organization & one that attracts & retains talent. I truly believe that if Cousins enters the season w/o a long term deal & plays well that he will want to stay here (as will others). Unlike the past this is now a team that likely will attract players.

I think it depends. I wouldn't want to see a huge contract locking us into a ton of money over the next few years for a guy I and others are not 100% sold on. But I trust scott to get a reasonable deal done. Also what's bad about him playing the year on the tag? Would we be able to move cap space from this year to next if he was extended with a lower cap hit for this year?

Note that these position updates do not necessarily mean that the following players will strictly play one particular position, as they may be asked to play in other areas, too. Many of these updates reflect positions that were played at the end of the 2015 season, and have been referenced by the Redskins coaching staff and executives recently as well.

Offense:
--Brandon Scherff is now listed strictly as a guard after being a guard/tackle for the 2015 season. Scherff started out at tackle before transitioning over to guard during training camp, where he appeared in 1,067 snaps, most on the offense.

Defense:
--Chris Baker will be a defensive end after being listed as a defensive lineman last season. Baker totaled a career-high six sacks in 2015, playing primarily defensive end, but the coaching staff has noted that he could play some on the inside as well in 2016.

--Trent Murphy is now listed as a defensive end after spending the past two seasons as a linebacker. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, defensive coordinator Joe Barry and Murphy himself all have talked about his transition to the defensive line this offseason.

--In another defensive line update, Kedric Golston will be listed as a nose tackle. The coaching staff has noted that the 32-year-old could see quite a bit of action at nose tackle in 2016.

--Will Blackmon, Deshazor Everett , DeAngelo Hall and Kyshoen Jarrett are listed as safeties in the latest roster update. Blackmon played cornerback last season, but the coaches believe his versatility will lend a helping hand at safety as well during the 2016 season. Everett was also listed as a cornerback in 2015, while Hall and Jarrett were defensive backs.

More concerned with who Scot and Jay are sold on. If they believe in him then there is no reason not to sign him.
