Time is up on the Miles Austin experiment in Dallas

IMHO its time to part ways with the oft injured receiver and move on with either a inexpensive FA or a Draft pick. Those salary cap Dollars could be better spent elsewhere.

It 's also time to question the Dollars and Sense or Cost vs. Reward of one of the better players in Cowboys history in Demarcus Ware. Wares production has waned due to injuries over the last 3 seasons and he is due a salary of 12.2 million with a cap hit of 16 million for 2014.

If Ware would take a major pay cut ala Doug Free he might return to the Cowboys if not it does not make sense to restructure his contract to keep him on the Cowboys roster based on the last 3 years production vs. the Salary cap hit.

Ware has previously stated he would help the club anyway he could then clarified he will not be willing to take a pay cut only a restructure. Ware could be playing chicken with Jerry Jones on the June 1st cuts. Jerry is loyal to a fault to his players but it is time to push the reset button on Ware simply due to the Contract that Jones gave him back in 2009. Cowboys save 7.4 million for 2014 if Ware is cut.

This is not an indictment on Ware but sadly in the Salary cap era, you have to review production vs. cost with a almost brutal view, it is just the way business in the NFL has to be done.

Ware could take a pay cut and still play for the Cowboys .His open market value has been estimated at 5 million per year.

Something has to give and neither side is likely to be happy with the results.

I agree about Miles, Too much money too many injuries. He will probably go somewhere else and have a healthy productive year with our luck.
I think Ware is still very good when healthy. Early this past season and preseason he looked awesome. I also agree about the money issue too. Would be great if he took a cut or restructure with incentives added.

Hate to say it but I think we have to give serious thought to Carr.
Might have to seriously consider eating his contract.

Is it even doable at this time, or must we wait another year?

Austin is the obvious one, let all the FA walk except Bailey and maybe sign Spencer to cap friendly contract with incnetives. He may never be effective again. Hatcher is going to be 32 before the season starts so I see no reason to try and overpay. I like carr but he does not fit the defense.

Draft picks like aaron donald and james gayle would help the pass rush. Gayle is a lighter de with lots of speed. Would be a good 4th round candidate

We could do it as a post June 1st move.

At the moment we have no dead money going into 2015.
That would give us another year to hopefully look at a healthy Ware and D-line would look like.

OFC the problem would be replacing him. I think he is solid for the most part. I just dont think he is 12-13 million a year solid.

Would save us having to restructure him.

The depending on Ware's performance next year..... the option of maybe letting him go becomes something we have to consider.
But between 2 I go ahead and eat Carr's contract first.

Then opens up the possibility of eating Romos the following year if it needs to be done.

Just a long way of saying thats how we could eat our 3 richest contracts over the next 3 years.... actually with part of Tony's going into dead money in the 4th year.

OK.
I agree with him being solud but not worth the money Jerry paid. I don't think any NFL player owes money back as long as they honor their side of the deal, because their careers could end on one play, but I do think Ware will give some back and hopefully Carr will too.

If you can tell me you know Ware will be hurt again I'll think about cutting him

Carr would be a dumb cut IMO both cap-wise and on the field wise. I personally like our top 3 corners and think once we get a pass rush and decent safeties they will be considered a strength. Is he overpaid? Yup...but too late on that...

Miles is gone. Only question in my mind is whether its before or after 6/1.

Orton counts way too much for us right now. I love having him as a backup, but don't know if the idea of cutting players that will actually play makes sense over a cutting a backup that is basically insurance. He will be a 6/1 cut because we need to know Romo is healthy before we can cut him. Doing this Saves us $2M in 2014, $2M in 2015 and almost $5M in 2016.

Don't be shocked if something happens with Free again. 2014 he is borderline, but look at those 2015 and 2016 numbers...

Top 3 CB's you mean Claiborne? I'm not happy with that kid, maybe he was just that hurt. I like the SMU kid taht filled in for him.

As for Orton, any chance he has trade value? Either to a team needing a QB or wanting a backup? It's nice to have him, but we need every dollar so "nice to have" things go first. And if we cut Romo, that means we need to address QB this year, and in an early round. Still crossing fingers that McCarron is there in the 4th and we can get him.

I think Ware stays, and should stay, pay cut or not. It's bad enough that we need to find a couple of DL as it is. If you cut Ware now you have to find 3 new DLmen. It makes no sense to even consider cutting him.

His cap number is $16 million. I'm not a Ware hater by any stretch, but when you are as far over the cap as we are, with pending FA's next year like TSmith, Dez and Murray, 30+ vets coming off sub par seasons have to take a CUT, or you have to make the June 1 move to save the $7 million. Just my opinion. Is keeping Ware worth losing one of those younger 3

Current cap numbers are misleading. It's important to know what difference releasing a player will make and when they can be released. Romo can't be released but he can and will restructure. Converting $12M salary to a bonus will free up $10M of 2014 cap space. Ware, Austin, and Carr have all reached the end of their guarantees. They can all be released without further new money. Obviously this would bring forward future cap hits. Since cap hits would be delayed until 2015 if these moves happened after June 1st it would be better if they could be done then. Equally obvious is that some cuts have to be made before the new NFL year starts. Cutting/trading Austin and/or Carr before June 1st makes the future situation better but makes the 2014 situation worse. These players could be offered pay cuts that make the remaining 2014 money guaranteed. Both sides would be wise to consider this. If either player rejects their market evaluation their contract will stand as is...until September when the Cowboys could renegotiate or release them. Finding optimal jobs elsewhere that late would be tough for Austin and Carr. Cutting/trading Ware helps immediately and since Austin and Carr can't be cut Ware will be if he doesn't accept a much lower deal in 2014.

My guess: Romo will restructure before the 2014 NFL year begins.
Ware will take a pay cut or be released before the 2014 NFL year begins.
Austin and Carr will be offered pay cuts but nothing will happen to them before June if they refuse.

Alternatively the GM could decide that none of them are overpaid and just restructure their deals. :noidea:

I don't know where you got your understanding of the cap from ....... but you are dead wrong on everything you just said.
Not insulting you or starting anything........ But you are so far off I wouldn't know where to start teaching you at

Cap hits delayed til 2015? I just LOLed at that one so bad someone would have thought I started smoking pot again

HowStuffWorks "How does the NFL's salary cap work?"

DeMarcus Ware Contracts, Salaries, Cap Hits, & Transactions

Pretty easy stuff to look up at Spotrac.com. Ware has cap hits of $3,253,750 in 2014 and 2015. he has cap hits of $1,032,000 in 2016 and 2017. These figures are in addition to his salaries, roster bonuses, and work-out bonuses. Those cap hits stay in those years as long as Ware is on the roster. If he leaves before June 1st those hits all count towards 2014. If he leaves after June 1st the 2015, 2016, and 2017 hits all count towards 2015.

Thats what you aren't understanding though.

If you cut a player you owe him EVERY DOLLAR at that moment. It does not get stretched out over the length of the contract.

If you cut the player after June 1st....... You can split that money in half.
Say we cut Ware post June 1st. He gets half right there. and the other half in 2015.
There is no 2016 to it.

Also in addition to that. The NFL has an 87% rule. 87% of the salary cap has to go to players on the active roster. Meaning at the current cap you can only have 25 million in dead money on any year.

Depending on which site you goto the Cowboys are carrying anywhere from 12 million to 16 million in dead money into next season already.

Which is what limits us to pretty much cutting only one big contract this offseason. Ware or Carr either one would pretty much max us out.

Austin doesn't even save us 500,000

And just cause I knew you were wrong .....

Says pretty clear on spotrac ....

Ware's cap hit for 2014 is 16,003,750 ....... (where the hell did you come up with 3.2 million at??)
And right beside it ..... it says dead money 8,571,500 (which is what would carry over into 2015 )

and hate to say this cause I love Ware.

Wow he just may be gone if he doesn't take a pay cut.

I'd hate to redo his contract with the past two years of injuries :/

With the new CBA it's not 50/50 on the post June 1st cuts. Only That years portion of the dead money stays in that year and the rest of the dead money moves to the next year.
