We all know all about how many games this receiving corps has played since coming into Blacksburg back in the 2007 season, but another stalwart began his career on that fatefu day in charlotte as well. Blake DeChristopher stepped into the right tackle slot as a redshirt freshman and had a good game going before suffering devastating internal injuries from a blind side cheap shot by an ECU defender. He missed the next game….one more…and has not missed a start since. He has start 38 of a possible 40 games since his freshman year. He has played very well in those games and projects as the starter again next year on the right side. He is a hell of a run blocker (ask Ru, DE or DW) and has become a damn good pass protector as well. How many times have you heard “Holding, offense, #62….”? Yeah, not very often at all.
At left tackle, I expect Nick Becton to slide into the starting spot full time. An offseason should allow him to fully heal from his foot issues and he has the size and quickness to be a good one here, and has played well in platoon work this season with Andrew Lanier.
Behind the two starters, I am projecting two highly touted Freshman to slide into the 2 deep. Laurence Gibson was an early enrollee this past year and dressed for every game but did not have his shirt burned. Mark Shuman is a legacy recruit who has all the work effort of his brother, Ryan, but twice the physical attributes and more speed. I expect our tackle position to be in good hands for years to come with these two guys.
Laurence Gibson
Andrew Lanier was admirable in his effort this past season but he has tough time keeping weight on. He is listed at 275 but is close to 260 right now at the end of the season. He has quickness and fantastic technique but can get engrossed and mauled by bigger defenders. With our lack of depth at the tight end spot, I would not be shocked to see him in the fold as a situation sixth blocker or even a goal line target. That would be a nice little wrinkle. He was recruited as a tight end and catches passes in practice.
I know very little about Kory Gough, Darian Fisher or Patrick Williams but will learn more over the Spring.
