can some one explain to me exactly how the rule states that if Bubba comes to Nebraska why cant he go to MLB for three years,

i understand that is the rule but how is the rule worded, what exactly says he cant go play MLB,

is it cus he is committed to football and he falls under CF guidelines for turing pro,

or.

is it cus your only elgible for the MLB draft every three years.

I got into this discussion last night at the bar. and i wasnt sure how it is worded, but the guy i was talking to was conviced its because of mlb draft elgibility?

please explain

if you enroll in college, and take classes, you aren't eligible for the draft again until after your Junior year, or until you turn 21

I guess he could still take a summer class or something as long as he doesn't participate in too many days of camp.. idk, it's complicated.

He can take summer classes, and hes planning to iirc.

Its if he doesnt sign by the August 15th deadline he cant be drafted again till hes 3 years removed from HS or 21 years old.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I thought it was only a college thing that he would have to wait until after his Junior year to be eligible for the draft again. So even if he doesn't go to college, he has to wait until he's 3 years removed from HS or 21?

Might be two years, I'm not 100% sure. There are kids who go to jucos and are eligible to be drafted after two years.

Here is what MLB.com has on it.

Certain groups of players are ineligible for selection, generally because they are still in school. The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:

High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;

College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and

Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

A Club generally retains the rights to sign a selected player until 11:59 PM (EDT) August 15, or until the player enters, or returns to, a four-year college on a full-time basis. A player who is drafted and does not sign with the Club that selected him may be drafted again at a future year's Draft, so long as the player is eligible for that year's Draft. A Club may not select a player again in a subsequent year, unless the player has consented to the re-selection.

This is the correct answer. All other answers are bullshit!

But now I don't think Herbie is correct based on what he posted from mlb.com. That leads me to believe irule is correct and that is what I always thought.

So, the way that reads, anybody that has graduated high school and not attended college is eligible, (no time restriction listed) and also anybody that attends juco is eligible with no time restriction. The only way that they would have to wait the 3 years or 21 is if they attend a 4 year university. I thought it was put into effect as some sort of compromise between MLB and the NCAA. There is no time limit for anybody not attending a 4 year university as far as I can tell per that listing.

if said player redshirts then after the RS Soph. year they would be eligible for the draft. If they were to go to a prep school for 1 year & then to college they would be eligible after their true Soph. year (similar to Larry Fitzgerald in the NFL draft.)

College Basketball has the 1 and done rule. Football/Baseball has a 3 year service time after high school.

Prime reason why Bryce Harper decided to drop out of HS and get his GED. That enabled him to go to JC then get drafted early. Loophole in the system....Herbs got the dealio on lockdown.

LOL......I think we are talking past each other.....

Nobody is disputing the 3 year , "junior", or 21 for kids that go to a FOUR year college.

That is my interpretation and I agree with irules first response answer to the question that he gave with this:

"if you enroll in college, and take classes, you aren't eligible for the draft again until after your Junior year, or until you turn 21"

I agree with irule as that is how I understand the rule to be. Herbie made a statement about the whole 3 year, or age 21 thing applying to anyone who didn't sign after being drafted. Then from what he posted from MLB, that doesn't appear to be true. As long as you don't go to a FOUR year college, you can be eligible to be drafted next year even if you go to juco. ONLY if you go to a FOUR year college does the 3 years (sophomore if you redshirt) or reach the age of 21 apply.

The question matters little as Bubba is going to be a 4 year starter here at the "U" at QB and be a baseball star as well. He is going to realize that leading us to the NCG and going to the College World Series with all new coaches and being a super star in the college ranks is a much better future than being average at a farm club (even for millions of $). He will get much better in the college ranks and go on to be a big league player in whatever he selects to play or both... He will follow the footsteps of Bo Jackson and Deon Sanders…

Just my opinion… or should I say wish….<-> Oh well, thought I would stir the pot…. :eyebrows:

I just don't understand why you make yourself available for the draft if you have no intention of signing. The whole MLB draft rules are pretty foreign to me I guess.

you don't declare eligible, the teams just draft anybody who would be considered eligible, and hopes to sign them.
