If the stats you are citing have low predictive value, then how worthwhile is citing them really?

Thank You! This guy uses stats way too much. Stats are a good tool but only when taken in context. In this case you have to keep in mind the small sample size & the fact that - as you mention - the Rams are a team in transition. Consider the Cowboys game - the Rams D had all types of problems in the 1st half but played great in the 2nd half. That could be a springboard for the rest of the season or perhaps not - only time will tell.

This guy uses stats way too much because there are no opinions associated with stats. You can use the eye test all you want but that's opinion based at best. You can say the Rams D played great in the 2nd half, or you could say the Cowboys offense played poorly in the 2nd half. It's a matter of how you perceive the on field play. You can only perceive stats one way. 26 points per game allowed by the Rams is good for 28th in the league. 7 Rushing TD allowed is the most allowed in the league. 4.9 rushing yards per attempt is good for 29th in the league. And I never once said they will be bad all year long. I've been saying that right now, the Rams defense sucks. ESPECIALLY against the run.

I agree that stats will ultimately tell the tale, but you can't pick a small sample size and make such predictions. And BTW, the debate was over the DL of the Rams, not the entire defense. PPG (the stat you quote) also has to be viewed in terms of the total situation. Such as was the defense left defending a short field too many times, were their STs scores, did the opposing defense score, etc.
