Also what happens to an rfa if he isn't signed? Does he become a ufa after sitting a year? I know drafted players can sit a year to become ufas(see Umberger and more recently Schultz).

No. Mtl retains his RFA rights until he serves that year.
the guys returning to UFA you are talking about were all cases where the team that drafted him didn't sign him to a contract at all.

serves that year, does that mean turns 27 or 28 whichever makes him a ufa by age?

Yea puck you're right now that I think about it. I find it strange that rfas have no way of forcing a team to be more reasonable with contract figures. I know there is arbitration but I'm not sure how that process actually works and when a player is actually able to start the process(I'm imagining it's too late to do so now).

If MTL accepted Nino for Subban straight up I'd say the Isles would win that trade in resounding fashion. Nino hasn't been able to stick with the big club yet and for all his success in the AHL any intelligent GM won't trade a proven NHL player for a guy who shows potential if he can make the jump.

Montreal would want more than Nino who's developing nicely. I don't want P.K. Subban.

fair enough as far as not wanting PK, I'm not sure I would either. I'm just intrigued because he's still unsigned.

about Nino what's the deal with him not making the big club this year? I've heard how he's a top prospect but I guess the few times I've seen him he just hasn't seemd like it.

The only reason Nino was in the NHL last season was because of his cap hit. The reason he didn't get a camp invite is because the Islanders want him to spend the entire season in the AHL.

Nino scored 2 goals tonight. He now has 21 goals in 42 games.

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Monday the signing of defenseman P.K. Subban to a two-year contract (2012-13 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Subban, 23, notched 36 points (7 goals, 29 assists) in 81 regular season games in 2011-12. He tied for second on the team with five powerplay goals. The second-year defenseman also served 119 penalty minutes and registered 205 shots on goal, ranking him seventh among NHL defensemen, and led the Canadiens with an average of 24:18 of ice time per game. Subban led the Canadiens for most powerplay ice time with 283 minutes and 4 seconds.

Since making his NHL debut with the Canadiens back in 2009-10, Subban has registered 76 points (21 goals, 55 assists) in 160 regular season games. The 6’0’’, 206 lbs defenseman has scored 14 of his goals on the powerplay, and has three game-winning goals. Subban has served 245 penalty minutes and owns a plus-2 plus/minus differential. He has tallied three goals and 12 points in 21 NHL playoff games, including two with the man advantage. Subban was voted to the NHL All-Rookie Team following the 2010-11 season.

A native of Toronto, Subban was the Canadiens’ third selection (second round, 43rd overall) at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to making his debut at the professional level, Subban played with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls and earned a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 and the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships.

That looks like a FRAM oil filter contract - You can pay me a little now, but be prepared to pay me a LOT later...

Fucking Habs, making this contract expire when the Flyers have to give raises to Giroux, Schenn, and Couturier...

Yup - and Markov will likely be retiring, Gionta's contract is up, the Habs should have lots of cash to pay PK.

Wow, it's worse (for the Flyers) then I thought.

It was fun while it lasted

$2.875 M per year.

That's a very team-friendly contract, IMO.
