First I saw they were down 1-0, then the next time I saw it was 8-0. I thought crap Morton got shelled then I looked at the boxscore and saw Frieri pitched so that explained it for me.
It is just mind numbing when you are still in the game down 2-0 In that pressure situation to stop the bleeding, that you would even think for 1 second to bring in Frieri.
we really need to see what pimentel can be next year.
he really isn't getting many innings or any rhythm to develop a flow to see if he is in or out next year.seems like he could be the 7th inning guy with some confidence and regular work.
wilson isn't hacking it this year.
hughes has bounced back well this year so that is 2 out of 3 for him.
but if they had watson, melancon, pimentel, hughes, then wilson, gomez, and whoever else is out of options or mazzaro for next year, our pen would be set. could also add one of the starters who can't be sent down and too valuable to waive.
bottom line, send frieri to the minors for now, if he doesn't clear, trade him for a low prospect and move on. he might be good next year, but he isn't the man this year and not for our future.
Also: I hateeee playing in parks with a off-center camera. It's impossible as a fan to judge pitches. There are some places where it's hard to put a camera out there, but if a park can do it, there's no reason not to.
The hell with Pedro's "issues", Morel is not worthy of being on the field. He has no value to the team...there are guys with better stats in AAA...why? He'll probably homer now, but it won't change my mind.
EDIT: Plain and simple, I'll never support not putting your best lineup out there. If Pedro is struggling, so be it...but bring up the best AAA option you have, not a guy hitting .250 in the minors. He's done exactly what should be expected of him...watch three straight strikes with the pitcher on deck.
They really need Marte back, that offense vs LHP is just terrible. I'm glad Clint dropped Polanco down the lineup vs the lefty, ideally he would be sitting, but without Marte it's not really possible.
I am as Big a Pirates fan as anyone & I would LOVE to see them do well this yr & make the playoffs, being that they are so close for the division lead.
That being said however, I am starting to think that we have too many holes on this team this yr to successfully address every need for this team at the deadline.
We need BP help. SP help. We need a 1B answer, Badly & we could also use more help in the form of a bench bat.
All this, I believe will be to much to try & get at one trading deadline:
Especially with the sticker prices in trying to get answers in other players, from other teams.
The Pirates have an excellent farm system, but, not much of that depth is at the AAA level, so we are not going to get a lot of help from Indy this yr.
It is a problem.
I agree with the idea of not overpaying to much in a trade.
However, the Pirates usually don't spend money in Free Agency in the off season. And, while I supported the team not giving the insane money to AJ Burnett that he got.
I ask you, how good would Justin Morneau look at 1B for us right now? He could have been doing for us, what he's been doing for Colorado this yr. for 2yrs - 12M
The Pirates also don't like to give up their better minor league prospects in trades, to bring in actual upgrades to the club.
Again, understandable, to a point.
However, when you don't spend money in the off season to bolster the team. And, you are loathe to give up quality prospects in trades at the deadline, to bolster your team...
That team is going to have holes.
Which we certainly do.
Maybe, too many this yr, to be serious contenders.
We have a lot of problems with this team, that need to be addressed.
I don't want to gut the farm system trying to address them all.
Trading can help a team & having a good farm system can certainly help a team.
However, part of the Pirates problems that are biting them now, comes from having a playoff season last yr & not adequately addressing team needs & bolstering the team in the off season.
Having a quality farm system is Great.
Having the 3rd lowest payroll in baseball is still a Major problem.
we had great mo, won 5 out of 6, had a day off thursday to travel and came out so flat.
unless we can't hit LHP, we have been dead at the plate.
i think pedro, even tho he has a mediocre year at the plate, is taking pitches and helps push the pitcher into higher pitch counts. with him out seems pitchers are mastering our teams better and not accumulating pitch count so we can get to their pen early for our usual late game comeback.
