Fixed and only option selected.

I think his biggest problem is the players he wants to trade make a lot of money. Teams seem to be hesitant to make a deal & add cap space. The Devils have been trying to dump Rolston all year & can't find any takers.
Plenty of teams should be interested in Phillips but he hasn't played very well & will be an UFA. The Isles got a 2 & probably a 5th for Wisniewski. Phillips is a better defenseman Murray should get more for him than Snow did for Wiz but that doesn't mean he will.
I don't think McGuire would be as bad a GM as you would think. The guy is a superb talent evaluator. Illitch has been approached by half the teams in the league about Nill, I'd be surprised if he goes anywhere before his contract is up (and I believe he just got an extension).
I wonder what would happen if they went off the board and brought in someone like Igor Larionov.
Find somebody who knows their way around scouting and you've found your man. Too much stock goes into who people are and not enough into who they know.
Exactly, the thing is that Murray has done a pretty good job scouting. In 2 or 3 years we'll see the likes of Cowen, Karlsson and Rundblad start to really develop and excel at the NHL level.
Murray has already started rebuilding and he's done it from the net out. Robin Lehner looks like a really good goalie too. All that's left to do is bring in some offensive talent and that's usually a lot easier then finding defensemen in the draft.
So for all the flak that I've given Murray and others have given him, he's actually started the rebuild already. The area of concern with him is his UFA signings, trades and coach hiring/firings. For that alone he probably deserves to be fired. However, it's tough since I think he'd be the perfect GM to try and rebuild with through the draft.
This might be true.
He has a good eye for young talent. The issue is that he is too impatient. He just isn't much of a manager of assets. He overpays the wrong guys. He seems to be really stuck in the "win right now" mode. In the past I've seen how this could be justified but this year they WILL NOT contend so get some picks and/or prospects and they can be in very good shape for this offseason.
Kovalev, Leclaire, Phillips, Ruutu and Shannon come off of the books this year. Rundblad will be playing for the Sens on an entry level contract next year. One of (maybe two) Cowen, Wiercioch or Gryba will also be playing on an entry level deal. All these things will give Ottawa some financial flexibility for the first time in a while. If the Sens can get a few more draft picks they can be set up well for free agency and the draft.
However, I am just dreading the day I read about Rundblad or Cowen being dealt to try and save Murray's job. If he can COMPLETELY switch to building for next year and beyond then he would probably do a good job.
Murray would certainly be better than McGuire.

Damien Cox is shitting all over him on this week's Studs 'n' Duds.
fwiw.
I saw that. He's just a young kid though and I think him flipping out like that shows that he hates to lose.
I'm not too worried because he'll learn to control his emotion a bit better as he matures.
I didn't like what he said but I liked that he said it, if that makes any sense.
He is a fiery competitor. He hates to lose and takes it personally.
Lehner is going to be a very good goalie.
