I was in Asheville last year and the downtown area was actually pretty interesting. A lot of hippie types mixed in with your traditional conservative southerners but they all seemed to get along. Plus it's in the mountains so the weather is not quite as bad as some places. Augusta on the other hand, I'm going to go out on a limb and say in the first week of August, it will be Fucking hot.

I'm getting a lot of the hippie vibe from the people here. It's still pretty cool being in the mountains though. I wouldn't really call the "downtown" part of the area a true "city" though, which (to me) is/was kind of disappointing (I'm just basing that off of being an idiot and not marking where my parking garage was and not being the least bit scared or frightened while walking around at night at 9 PM for an hour).
