5. Aldon Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Week 15 vs. Pittsburgh (+7.0)

Smith (who didn’t actually spend that much time at 3-4 outside linebacker, with all but 16 plays in the 49ers’ sub-package) had a field day when the Steelers came to San Francisco. He finished the day with an incredible three sacks (one nullified by penalty), four QB hits, and three hurries on 37 rushes. An remarkable ratio as Max Starks was given his toughest night of the year.

This one deserves its own post because it's awesome:

2011?s Best Performances: 3-4 Defensive Ends | ProFootballFocus.com

9. Ray McDonald, San Francisco 49ers: Week 3 at Cincinnati (+5.7)

The oft-forgotten man in San Francisco because of who plays opposite him, McDonald graded positively in all bar one of his performances, with his Week 3 showing against Cincinnati earning the highest score. Clint Boiling was no match, earning a benching after McDonald put him to the sword on a hit-and-three-hurry day that was topped off with outstanding work in the run game that didn’t show up on the stat sheet.

7t. Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Week 10 vs. New York Giants (+6.3)
7t. Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Week 1 vs. Seattle (+6.3)

The first two entries from the No. 2-ranked player in our Top 101 players from 2011. Smith dominated James Carpenter in particular as he walked away with two sacks, three hits, and five pressures in Week 1. Nine weeks later, he had himself five pressures and a batted pass that proved to be the game-winner against the Giants and tacked on three defensive stops. Fantastic efforts.

5. Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Week 2 vs. Dallas (+6.5)

Derrick Dockery and Doug Free are probably still wondering what hit them, with Smith simply unstoppable in Week 2. The one hit and six pressures tell part of the story, but you’ve got to remember he picked up three tackles for short gains and turned a tackle for a loss into a fumble. Like we said, unstoppable.

2. Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Conference Championship vs. New York Giants (+7.8)

Are you getting bored of hearing Smith’s name yet? After a rather tame first half (where the Giants double-teamed him and then some), Smith hulked up for the remainder of the Conference Championship game with him nearly destroying David Diehl, Kevin Boothe, or Davis Baas any time the Giants dared leave him one-on-one. He walked away with a sack, three hits, and nine pressures and didn’t come off the field once on 93 plays. To keep going for that many plays without slowing down is hard to fathom even months after it happened. Yet, it wasn’t even his best display of the season …

1. Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers: Week 6 at Detroit (+8.5)

Fitting that a man with five entries in the Top 10 would have the highest score of any one game. Smith took over the 49ers’ victory over the Lions with another incredible ironman display that saw him on the field for every snap. His relentless motor pushed him to two sacks, a hit, and six pressures while doing some stunning work in the run game that earned him a +4.9 grade for this alone. Rob Sims was a tired man after Smith was through with him on his way to the highest grade of any 3-4 end all season.

2011's Best Performances: Safeties | ProFootballFocus.com

9t. Adrian Wilson, Arizona Cardinals: Week 14 vs. San Francisco (+4.0)

This was a fine season for Wilson who bounced back from a disappointing 2010 campaign. Keep in mind he also played the entire 2011 season with a torn bicep. His Week 14 display stood out as his best performance and gets him a spot on this list, displaying all the talents we’ve come to expect from the Cardinals’ safety. Even after picking up a penalty for a facemask infraction, Wilson earned his spot on this list by breaking up two passes, making two tackles for losses (one on third down), and generating a couple of pressures. A great day.

Forgot this one:

2011's Best Performance's: Inside Linebackers | ProFootballFocus.com

Top 5: 3-4 Inside Linebacker Performances

5t. Daryl Washington, Arizona Cardinals: Week 1 vs. Carolina (+6.0)
5t. Patrick Willis, San Francisco 49ers: Conference Championship vs. New York Giants (+6.0)

An All-NFC-West tie for fifth place, but for different reasons. Willis stood out with some excellent work in coverage that saw him give up four of six balls into his coverage for just 17 yards (with a pass deflection) while adding a sack and hit when rushing the passer. Washington was able to pick up two sacks and two interceptions (one called back by penalty), but also stood out in the run game where he showed off his talent for getting off blocks by beating players like Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil for tackles for losses and short gains. Fine days by both players.

I always rooted for Justin Smith even when he was playing for Cinci. I was one of many that was ecstatic when we signed him. The man is just fun to watch. I hardly see anyone trash talk him during games too, I find that to be a weird phenomena.

On the hand, (I may be stoned for saying this), but I think one of our most overrated players on this team is Bowman. The guy is good, but it is becoming borderline ridiculous on the amount of rave reviews of him IMO. I think I saw a list recently on NFLNW (Warren Sapp vs. Marcelus Wiley) that put him on top 5 players in the NFL today. I thought that was weird to say the least. But I'm not complaining. I'd rather see that than seeing news about him from the opposite spectrum.

could be.......but when the UNIT is good, everyone appears better.

same with offense, players benefit from other good players around them.
