Slow football day? Uh, yes. I researched this a few years ago and chose not to post it then, but for any football enthusiast it's an interesting trivia piece:
Bronko Nagurski 1959 Round 10 - What, Bronko last played in 1943 - a full 3 seasons before the 49ers first existed? Sure, but this is Bronko Nagurski Jr. Jr played tackle for Notre Dame and was drafted by the team in the 10th round. He chose a long career in Canada instead.
Tom Osborne 1959 Round 19 - Yup, former ESPN College Football Coach of the Decade with Nebraska was a 19th round "halfback." He played a couple years with the Redskins before finishing up with the 49ers and becoming a coaching legend.
Fred Meyers and John Lennon - yeah, uh, not THE...
Lance Alworth 1962 Round 1 8th overall. Hall of Famer was lost to the higher paying AFL.
Brian Billick 1977 Round 11. Before Billick was a Super Bowl coach or TV personality he was a camp tight end for the 49ers.
Mike Mularkey 1983 Round 9. Yup, current Jaguars head coach was once drafted by Bill Walsh. Like Billick, he didn't make the team. Coincidentally, Tom Holmoe the worst Cal coach in recent years and the man with the worst last name of all time was taken by the team 5 rounds earlier.
George Mira and George Mira Jr. Senior was a 49ers quarterback in the 1960s. He was taken 15th overall in1964 and was one of several drafted to replace John Brodie. His biggest claim to fame is he quarterbacked the play when Jim Marshall ran the wrong way for a safety. George Jr. was a linebacker the 49ers took in the 12th round in 1988. He failed to play in an NFL game.
Sean Manuel and Sam Manuel - 7th round 1996. Many might not remember another bit of cuteness the 49ers played in 1996 (is it really any wonder the team tanked within three years?). With the 30th pick of the 7th round in the 1996 draft the 49ers took Sean Manuel tight end from New Mexico State. Then 15 picks later they took his twin brother, Sam, with the final pick in the draft. Together they combined for 3 catches and 18 yards for their careers.
Earl Morrall - 1956 2nd overall - I consider their handling of Morrall to be one of the biggest blunders of the franchise. Earl Morrall - 3 time Super Bowl winner, NFL MVP in 1968, and 2 time pro bowl quarterback - was selected #2 overall in 1956. He barely played and the 49ers sent him to Pittsburgh and drafted John Brodie #3 overall in 1957 (another weird bit of trivia - Brodie Croyle's full name is John Brodie Croyle). The team passed on Jim Brown to select Brodie when they already had YA Tittle as the starter (Tittle would play another 8 years) and Earl Morrall as the backup. Morrall made the pro bowl in Brodie's rookie year.
Bill Tobin 1963 14th round - You may remember Tobin as the GM for the Bears and Colts. He drafted Marshall Faulk, Marvin Harrison, and brought in Jim Harbaugh. He never made the team as a 49er.
