Pens Sign All Time Heavyweight Champ To Three Year Deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Deryk Engelland to a three-year contract extension, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The new contract goes into effect at the start of the 2011-12 season and will run through 2013-14. The average annual value of the deal is $566,700 over the term of the contract.

With the signing, the Penguins have locked up all seven defensemen on their current roster to contracts beyond this season: Alex Goligoski (2011-12); Ben Lovejoy (2012-13); Brooks Orpik (2013-14); Kris Letang (2013-14); Engelland (2013-14); Paul Martin (2014-15); and Zbynek Michalek (2014-15).

Wow! That's a good deal money wise. Shero is dang good at his job...Engo has played very well this season, been fairly solid defensively and stepped up to take a job as our fighter on the back end. With him taking that role and still being a safe 6th Dman, guys like Godard can become expendable.

Ok, if you read the thread I made in error, then you know how I feel on Engelland's deal... but this one is about the Pens in general and figured I would just use this as todays Pens thread... or what have you...

Now, I think the Pens did at bit, but I didn't pay close attention to the winter classic... but I hope they try these lines...

Kunitz-Sid-Geno
Cooke-Staal-Dupper
Conner/Talbot-Letestu-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams/Talbot-Asham/Talbot

Think about this... if Staal's line is able to produce on a regualr basis.. next yr, the fist lined is signed, Cookee-Staal signed... Dupper expendable or resign around 2mil if that line plays well... 3rd line... Letestu and Kennedy are RFA's, both should be resigned, neither will make 1mil. If Connor, a UFA, also makes 500K now and wil not sniff 1mil. If that line continues to play high level 3rd line hockey... that line could be resigned for under 3mil combined!
