I think this is a good sign for the Pens, and he will be a welcomed addition to a proud franchise that is at their peak.

He should be another piece to a mostly completed puzzle.

i actually think it's a great pickup...pretty low risk too. 700k, 1 year. he knows the division well, i think he'll fit in with the system, and makes the Pens one of the biggest pains in the neck to play against. seriously...we're a carcillo away from being the most annoying team on the planet. kunitz, cooke, asham, rupp, godard...the nice thing is most of those guys aren't just thugs (godard aside)...they can put up numbers and still be wrecking balls on the ice.

Wonder how this will affect my "Matt Cookes says Asham tastes like chicken" joke...it just won't have the same bite with these 2 guys playing on the same team...

It's a hell of a collection of grinders, speedsters and annoyances on the lower lines. If they strike gold with moving Staal up to the second line or Tangradi panning out, they should be pretty nasty.

man, i didn't even mention talbot in my list of 'players you love on your team and hate on others'. another nasty, truculent player with a scoring touch. there's gonna have to be some line jumbling though...our bottom 2 lines are jammed now. i think it's time for staalsie to be #2 Center and geno to move to the wing. that and tangradi doing well would be awesome. yet another rough man on the roster with him. this is probably the first time the pens have had a "nastier" line up than philly...

I guess we're looking at:

Kunitz - Crosby - Tangradi
Dupuis - Staal - Malkin (or interchanged; Staal is the better center)
Cooke - Talbot - Kennedy
Adams - Rupp - Asham

(B) Godard

i think it's more Malkin is the better winger. having staal center malkin is better than vice versa, however, on their own malkin is the better center. that's all i'm saying aboot dat!

Not to be a party pooper... But, I don't really see how this is that good of a signing. I understand that he's cheap (salary and player) and there's not alot of risk involved. As you all mentioned, he's just another role player that the Pens already have enough of.

Malkin makes better offensive plays, but defensively, I'd rather have Staalsy interrupting plays. They may also put Dups back with Crosby and let Cooke settle with Staal and Malkin to take pressure off Tangradi so he can play on the third line and add some size to it.

It would probably make sense in the beginning until Tangradi got his timing down.

There's nothing left to spend money on. It's a low risk, decent reward situation that allows some flexibility to pushing our other capable players up in the lineup.

CR! i feel like you've been missing for awhile...anyway, i agree it's not ideal, but it's savvy. 1 year, 700k? yeah...it's more of a band-aid situation, but the options for winger out there weren't plentiful. not good options anyway.

Asham is not some blockhanded goon. he can skate and score. he will be a player for the Pens and likely be more productive than Syko-tenk-karovski-tan....

you lost me with karovski...and i think he can at least be AS productive as some of the affore mentioned, and i don't think that he was even brought on because of offensive production. i think he fits well with our third line, forechecking type mold. there's some nasty crashers on this team now.

The thing you get with Asham is not only a grinder, but a player who can fit easily anywhere in your line up. He can mix well with all kinds of different players. Wish he would have went West!:(
