You're probably right. Although, as fear said, if they put a winning culture together and string together some nice draft classes then all will be forgotten.

"Thunder" sounds imposing. Unless you have been attacked by a pelican you dont really get that impressed. Sounds like a minor league baseball teams name to me.

It's not any worse than, say, Blue Jays, Oriels, or Cardinals. At least a Pelican can eat all of those.

Blue Jays, Orioles and Cardinals are all good-looking, colorful birds that can be made to look menacting. Pelicans are ugly, loud, obnoxious, grey, and they are harmless and shit all over everything. Pelicans are universally despised and laughed at.

And a billionaire who owns an NBA franchise thought it would be a good idea to name his team the Pelicans?
