I thought it sounded kind of stupid myself. Pelicans? There are hundreds of things in New Orleans to name a team after and they picked "Pelicans"? Not too bright.

It's not any worse than, say, Blue Jays, Oriels, or Cardinals. At least a Pelican can eat all of those.

You can't objectively discuss what names are best using reasoned arguments. It's just a laughable name IMO. I really don't have details to tell you why.
