Has he responded to your tweets?
The BP as a whole is one of the better in NL. It's the back end that is the issue. Injuries happen, but if Reynolds hadn't been injured for most of the season, I would be willing to bet that the 8th/9th inning issues wouldn't be a big issue like it has.
KT made a mistake in extending Putz another season through 2014. The problem for 2014 is what do you do with Putz(who has been pitching well in the 7th/8th), Bell(who has pitched well in 7th/8th), & Hernandez? Couple that with the 2 young arms in Mobile, Barret & Stites, who could be ready to contribute in 2014 & you have some tough decisions.
Just adding a +closer could easily solve most problems. But with having $12 mil in sunk cost for Putz & Bell, would they then be willing to spend another $5-8 mil for a closer like Mujica or Balfout, the best to possible FA closers? Doubtful. We are more likely seeing the BP in 2014 as we see now, unless Putz or Bell could be traded. Hopefully Stites or Barret will be ready to contribute out of spring. We would then have a BP of Collmenter, Ziegler, Thatcher, Reynolds, Harris, Stites/Barret, & one of Putz/Bell/Hernandez.
I've had some good laughs listening to Gibby and KT defend Heath Bell on the radio this past week. I understand that they have to defend their players, but they're not fooling anyone by saying horseshit like "Heath has been excellent" and "Bell has been a key part of the bullpen".
It's quite easy to defend Bell if you discount when he was used to close games. I haven't done the math, but I would be willing to bet that Bell's ERA is in the 2s in non 9th inning or closing situations. That was what he was brought in here for, 7th/8th inning role with spot closing when Putz/Hernandez need rest. With that being said, he is awful as a closer & should never be used to close a game again.
Both DH & Sipp have pitched well in Reno with neither giving up an earned run. The only issue for DH in Reno is walks, 9/5 SO/BB in 6.1 IP.
I agree that we've been pretty solid outside of the 8th/9th inning but that's the most important part of a bullpen... it doesn't matter if your 6th/7th inning lock it down if the back end of the bullpen can't hang on to a lead. We NEED a reliable closer and if we don't sign one this offseason I will be very disappointed. With Kubel's 6 mil. coming off the books I think we could land one of Rodney, Balfour or Munjica. I really like Jake Barrett and Matt Stites for the future, Ziegler and Collmenter have really been the only consistent guys out of the pen this year. Hell, even De La Rosa has looked like a solid lefty specialist
Balfour/Rodney/Munjuca, Putz, Ziegler, Thatcher, Barrett, Stites, Reynolds, etc. Not bad.
You guys prepared for a Goldy day off?
Also I still can't find the official roster move that brought up Bloomquist, but I'm guessing its Holmberg back down.
