Should Barnes go for a lifestyle altering payday in free agency or should he stay with the Clips? He is a defensive stopper and good veteran player that brings it every night. He can knock down the 3 and he knows his role and limitations. He also has the attitude you want in a team mate. Anyone know where James Posey is now?

Who is going to give a 33 year old role player a "lifestyle altering payday"? He has put up his best offensive numbers with teams that run and gun (like everyone does), so he's a no go if you need offense and don't run.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Pistons uniform as they could use his shooting and defense at the 3, but I wouldn't pay what he likely wants to come to Detroit---again he's 33!

Matt Barnes is a perennial one-year vet's minimum guy, and I really don't get it.

Looking at Basketball Reference, he was drafted in 2002 and waived before the season started, then a year and a half later got a 10-day from the Clips and eventually signed on for rest of that (2004) season, and since then he's bounced around almost every season on minimum contracts.

Season Team Salary
2004-05 Sacramento Kings NBA $695,046
2005-06 Philadelphia 76ers NBA $552,269
2005-06 New York Knicks NBA $131,593
2006-07 Golden State Warriors NBA $771,331
2007-08 Golden State Warriors NBA $3,000,000
2008-09 Phoenix Suns NBA $926,678
2009-10 Orlando Magic NBA $1,600,000
2010-11 Los Angeles Lakers NBA $1,765,000
2011-12 Los Angeles Lakers NBA $1,906,200
2012-13 Los Angeles Clippers NBA $1,229,255

He's not that bad of a player. Lots of worse guys get much better contracts than this all the time. Who's his agent? Sheesh.

Here's the recent quote from Barnes about upcoming Free Agency

“I’m going to sit down and talk to my family and see where the market’s at,” Barnes said. “I’ve been one of those guys the last three or four years that’s always been a great bargain. I’ve played for the mid-level and have played well but have yet to see a pay day. Not to say that I’m asking for the world, but I’m definitely looking for a salary increase.”

“I had a great season with the Clippers and my family is very comfortable here in L.A.,” Barnes said. “So the Clippers are going to be one of my top choices, but we’re looking for a pay increase.”
_______________

In the summer of 2010 Cleveland offered Barnes a 2yr contract worth double the amount he ended up signing for in LA. Him crying about not getting paid is his own fault.

That's a tough call on Barnes. On the one hand, based on what BRS posted, you could see where he has been underpaid for much of his career.

On the other hand, as someone pointed out, he's also 33 years old. That's darn near AARP territory in the NBA. Maybe a $3 - 5 million dollar 2 year deal?

:agree:

It's not like all Barnes has been offered is veteran minimum contracts. He has simply chosen to sign minimum contracts to be on teams with an opportunity to compete for a title. He won't get a big payday, especially now when teams are tightening the reigns with the new CBA taking full effect.

Hence my question. I think the 3-5 million range would be good but he is going to have to play for a doormat.

Sounds about right for maybe a two year deal. I doubt anyone signs him for 5 million per year. However, the right situation may present itself with a contender thinking he can be a key role player and give him something in the salary range that you are thinking.
