I know some of you guys do not like Colin Cowherd but I like his work. So everyone is saying that each respective team of Thomas, mack and donald should pay them but why? Todays game favors the offense and you really just need a well coached defense that just knows how to play together and not have one guy eat up all the cap. Lets look at some of the highest paid defensive players this season.

1. Von Miller- great player, defense ranked 3rd last season.......Won 5 games
2. Eziekil Ansah- defense as a total ranked bottom 5 in the league, lions missed playoffs
3. Demarcus Lawrence- Almost half of Dallas losses came from the Elliot suspension and they could only average 7 points in those games. Shows that this team is built around Elliot and Dak and their offense
4. Fletcher Cox- success.
5. Olivier Vernon- Giants won 3 games
6. Justin Houston- Kansas City's defense is ranked bottom 3rd in the league
7. JJ Watt- Gets hurt every year the face of this team is now Deshaun Watson and Hopkins, in JJ's prime the Texans were barely a .500 team even with Andre Johnson. until Watson got there
8. Chandler Jones- Arizona missed playoffs and probably will again this year
9. Kawaan Short- Success
10. Marcell Darius- Success

Those players that were a success you can argue there are other plays that are reasons to why their teams are winnings such as Cam Newton and Carson Wentz.

Bottom line its better to invest your money in your key offensive players and better off not spending your cap fortune on certain defensive players.

All good points but some don't hold water.

I think paying Donald is wise cause it's an overall strong unit that is that much stronger with him on a team with SB aspirations

I would not pay Earl Thomas cause it really contradicts the direction Seattle is heading, especially on defense. That's a unit being rebuilt and will be at best below average, so pouring a ton of cap space into a guy who will be on the wrong side of his career soon, just so you can turn the defense into maybe an average one, doesn't make much sense

A lot of the same applies to Mack, and he is also a brutally inconsistent player who seems to have a 5 sack game everyone raves about, only not to be heard from for 4 weeks after. When you need so many pieces on one side of the ball, tying up so much money in a guy that isn't throwing the ball, is a good way to avoid building a strong contender

Demarcus Lawrence only made $1M last year, so not sure why he is on there when you justify your premise with last years standings. He was a steal last year. Is giving him $17M the best thing for the Cowboys? Not sure. Probably not (I tend to agree very few are), but one year deals are a great way to not get burned long term while you find out.

Anyhow...Want to talk 2018? Top QB cap hits as per Spotrac:
Garoppollo 37M
Stafford 26M
Carr 25M
Flacco 25M
Luck 24M

Care to revise your thought process? How did these teams do paying QBs in a game that "favors the offense"

Cowherd picks and chooses stats. Jaguars defense dominated the first half against the steelers and like most teams played scared with a lead. How many super bowl champs over the last decade had an elite receiver on their team? The top defenses are almost always title contenders. We just watched a final 4 of case kennum, nick foles, Blake bortles, and Tom Brady.

Well I dont follow the cowboys that closely on when he got paid but it doesnt take away that the cowboys are a more effective team with Dak and Elliot on their game than Lawrence wouldnt have made a difference if he made 20 bucks or 17 mil last season.

you proved my point with luck when healthy the colts are a 11 win team without they are a bottom 3 team. Flacco won a super bowl for the ravens and he is terrible now because he is over the hill, you cant argue that Stafford, Jimmy G and Carr are not the most important players of their team if they want to have success.

I dont agree with Cowherd for one reason: dlinemen are probably as equally important as olinemen and they are trying to get paid quite a bit more.

I mentioned that I think Aaron Donald is worth a little more than Zack Martin in his salary thread. Martin, who was drafted right around where Donald is and is as decorated as Donald, is making around $14 mil a year. For Cowherd's argument to have any water, Donald would need to be asking for $13-15 mil a year and most likely he is asking for $22-25 mil a year.

So to me Cowherd is sounding like he is making a good point but ultimately missing the bigger picture, imo.

I'm only going off what you wrote because I didn't watch the video, but I'm simply arguing your premise is wrong. I listed the top 5 QBs in the league from a cap hit perspective. I didn't cherry pick the list. The top 5 QBs are all on teams that according to your metric would be classified as failures. So that completely counters the argument you made about it being a bad idea to spend big $'s on defensive players because looking at the Offensive side shows the exact same thing.

Von Miller- still one of the best edgerushers in football

Ansah- overrated yes

Lawrence- One of the best edges in the league

Cox- one of the best DL in the league

Houston- Still one of the best edges in the league since coming back from a friendly fire ACL; defense didn't suck because of him or his contract.

JJ Watt- Reggie White level when he was healthy- not sure if he can stay healthy anymore; of course they don't amount to much if their QB's are awful

Chandler Jones is more of a super compiler than an elite edge to me, but AZ's QB situation has been a problem for 2+ years now

Short- Obviously one of the best in the league

Dareus- Drama, more drama, and drama for the Bills.

Analytics if anything I bet is probably ok with paying elite defenders more than they are worth. A QB can cover up flaws. There are no shortcuts to building a good D. You got one or you don't.

Aaron Donald probably isn't even worth what an average QB is worth insofar as wins go...

Doesn't mean you shouldn't pay him if you can.

Like I don't get the argument you should double-down on offense if you already have a QB.

QB's can cover up a whole roster of crap if they're good enough.

You got two good CB's and a shit slot CB and guess what the offense is going to hammer...

It should be noted that a lot of the recent big WR moves have been with teams who have QB's on their rookie contract

Watkins-Goff
Cooks-Goff
Watkins-Mahomes
Jeffrey-Wentz
Robinson-Trubisky
Jackson-Winston
SF and Dallas were in the market for Watkins.

Donald and the Rams get run all over.

Figure a top DT would put a stop to that.

Ziggy Ansah is 40 years old.

Colin Cowherd never even played kickball at recess.

Neither fact is relative to the other.

JJ Watt gets hurt a lot, face of the franchise is now the QB who missed most of the season.

Why does anyone care what this annoying nerd says?
